MG MG Y Type - YT Threshold plates

Hi all, I am getting some work done on the interior of the TY and carpet is one of the things I am replacing. So two questions...... 1 - After looking at the floor board diagrams that have been posted I see a cleat attached at the rear, where carpet is tucked. My YT does not have this feature. The floors seem original as all the other nut plates and fixings are period and look original. Does the YT have this feature?

2 - Are threshold plates used in the YT? And if so, would someone have a picture of this detail.

Thanks..... CR

Hello CR

Are you referring to the fillets behind the heel board? If so, see attache drawing of a r/h YT floor board. The YT definitely uses a heel board panel - in contrary to the YA.

In case, you wonder what the chain in the photo is about: it's my dog's safety belt fixture.

Was that what you were looking for?

Anton,

I will have to look closer to what aligns the Heel board. It is all still original on my car, and I am not sure if anything is missing, or was not used on YT. I am attempting to make a carpet template. Does the carpet go under the heel board? Sorry for delay... my old faithful computer went to where ever computers go after they die.

CR,

I can only presume that somewhere along the road there where YA /YB floorboards fitted to your YT. This might explain why there are no wood screw holes that would hold the fillets.
The carpet goes under the heel board by about 1/2 or 3/4", just as far as the cut out of the fillet would allow it to.

Are the curved metal strips that hold down the carpets on the curved outer edges still fitted to you car? The YT ones are shorter than the YA/AB ones (because of the heel board). This would further help to identify....

Anton,

There are no hold down strips at all. I thought there may /should be some , but have no way to see if they should be there. As you know there are not many examples around to look at. Hence this BBS.

Hi All,
I have query concerning the carpet edge strips.

These will cover some of the floor-board retaining screws along the outer edge. (At least they seem to on my floorboards (not original, but hopefully an accurate replacement.)

Is it a good idea to counter-bore the floor-boards to set the retaining screw/washer down to level with the floor?

Or doesn't it matter when the underfelt and carpet are fitted?

Why don't you look up "Y's on parade" and check if there are some YT owners living in your vicinity? Or else start a new thread asking for Ontario based owners...
I add a photo of one of my floorboards with the fillet being clearly visible to the left and the carpet strips at the bottom of the picture. The strips can be obtained from NTG.

I do not recall what I did about the three retaining screw holes that are located underneath the carpet strips. Presumably, I just countersunk the boards without using any dished washers there.

P.S.: the attached drawing comes from Dave Lawrence's book "Let there be Y's". A must have for any Y owner. Apparently one can order a CD.

Contrary to my innitial statement, it seems that YAs and YBs also had heel boards fitted - not only the YT :o)

I looked at NYG and saw what the threshold/carprt retainer pieces look like. I will look closer at the floors to see if I can find evidence of their installation.

I removed the heel board and did find the cleats referenced in the drawings as well as where the mice were living.

I think I actually know most of the YT owners in Ontario and it seems the car i am looking after at the moment is the most complete example.

Thanks for all the help so far!

The MGCC Y Reg Shop have had the steel carpet retaining strips manufactured for YA/B and YT, we sell them to all Y owners and NTG YT £55/set. We also sell carpet sets wool or synthetic in conjunction with Coverdale UK Ltd a specialist Auto Carpet manufacturer.

I had a chance to clean-up the floor boards and there is no evidence of the carpet strips ever being installed. I looked closer and found that the floors had been replaced at one time. Very good job was done. I looked through the spare parts and found the floor front sections, cleaned them up and found the evidence there. I have to get the flat head screws and washers to replace hex head bolts that have been used to attach the floor so that the strips will lay flat. Looks like the captured nuts have been re-threaded to 1/4-28 UNF, so I will have to get the MGA Posidrive type to replace. Think anyone will notice the difference?

This has been a forensics challenge!

Hello Peter Vielvoye
Sorry, it slipped my mind that the MGCC initiated and sells the carpet strips.
Your happy Swiss member, Anton

Hi CR
The Dished Washers are made to accommodate 1/4" countersunk screws (with a BSF thread).
Sure nobody will note the difference, Anton
