MG MG Y Type - YT - Throttle Cable

YT Owners,

I have just had my twin carbs overhauled by Burlen and all the springs replaced, which means my carbs now close correctly off the car.

When assembled to the car with my throttle cable connected there is a resistence that stops the carbs from completely closing and I would like to keep originality and have the carbs close without the need to add an extra vertical spring to close them shut, that was required before I had the carbs overhauled.

One strand of my cable is frayed so I contacted NTG to purchase Throttle cable for YT. NTG do not sell YT Throttle cables stating they do not have a pattern for an original YT Throttle cable and there is a difference to the one on the YA / YB. NTG advised me they have sold the MGA throttle cable to owners in the past in the absence of knowing what the original spec was.

Therefore my question is does anyone have an original unmolested throttle cable and outer cable?

My cable is flexible like bicycle brake cable with lots of strands of cable making up the cable which is then held inside an outer steel cable made up of wound steel. I will try to post picture. Is this inner wire ropes correct or should it be solid single wire cable similar to the choke cable on YA / YB?

Thoughts on consensus of other YT cables may solve mystery of what is correct is my guess.

I accept that all that is need is cable fit to do the job, but I don't want to experiment purchasing lots of different types to find solution if it already exists.

Basically it is the same as a TD one Richard for length and you just need to get NTG to ensure that it has the same connector ability on it as the Y/YB pedal. I believe this is what I did on my YT here.

The TD had solid linkages from pedal to carbies as show on attached photo (taken from Dave Braun's excellent TD Restoration website). The choke was a cable like the Y.

In that case I probably fitted a Y Type cable. It has been several years!

Hi Richard

Measure the cable and contact Richfield the speedo and cable suppliers. Have a look locally and find someone who manufactures throttle cables (often motorbike accessory firms) explain what you want and they ought to be able to provide you with what you need. They will no doubt supply both an inner cable to take from the throttle pedal and the outer casing (which you definitely need). It may not be entirely original (though what is after 65 plus years! No doubt MG may well have thought laterally if a key part was not in the parts bin and used something else. A quick glance for cable suppliers on the web includes Cable-Tec in Nottinghamshire 01623 440398 and nearer you Venhill in Dorking 01306 885111. Plus others on the net. Have a look on their webpages. I'm sure they could help and nearly all dealers such as Moss an NTG dont have the facilities to manufacture parts in house and buy in their cables from such suppliers (which is why hey are useful one-stop shops) and charge a hefty premium on top!

Hope that helps

If you can't get a suitable cable, use a brake cable from a bicylce. You said yourself that it looks like it.

I always use bicycle brake cables because of their high (stainless?) quality and Teflon inner lining for smooth operation. Never use cables without Teflon inner lining.
They are available in many colours, but I use the silvergrey variety because that looks a bit like the choke cable.

All,

Thanks for your replies, I think I've sorted a cable now, just waiting on post delivery to arrive.

Hi Richard, How did your new cable turn out? Could you please post a picture of the cable installed on the car.
