MG MG Y Type - YT tonneaus & hood covers

I've recently become the proud owner of a '49 YT re-imported from Australia. It has holes running along the doors and across the dash-top where there were once lift-the-dot pegs (removed by previous owner for re-spray and never replaced). The presence of these pegs (or rather holes) suggests that there was once a full tonneau.
My dilema is do I fill these holes, or do I replace the pegs? What is correct for a YT? Was there ever a full tonneau available? Was there a half tonneau available, and is this different from a hood-cover?
Please help!

Cheers,
Saul.

I have had my YT since 1961. It did not come with a tonneau, just a cover over the top (hood) storage area. I added a full tonneau early on and find it very worthwhile in protecting the interior from sun and weather, as well as hiding interior contents from passers by when parked. May not be "original" but sure works well.

The YT never had a full tonneau just a half one. The tonneau was supported by the five long lift a dot studs at the rear of the car, the three shorter ones on each rear quarter panel and the front to the lift a dot studs on the side of the front seat. The total number of original studs fitted to the YT, excluding those on the seats was 15 at the back and three on each quarter panel. Any on the doors or the dash top have been added by one of the previous owners.

Can I suggest that you acquire a copy of David Lawrence's book 'Let There be Y's' If you are seeking originality this and all other aspects are covered in great detail. There are pictures of the original tonneau and drawings showing positions of studs etc.

Regards.

Saul,

I agree that David Lawrence's book gives great detail re the tonneaus. Although pricey, it is a must have for any Y owner.

What the book doesn't state and perhaps someone else may know, the five long studs at the back are secured by nuts. Are all the short studs of the self-tapper type (including the ones in the front seats) or are some/all secured by nuts as well.

Thanks for all your replies guys to this - my first post to the BBS.
I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet (financially) and buy the book in order to prevent myself from wasting people's time with any more easily answered questions.
Just in case any of you are prepared to humour me further at this time - I am still in a state of confusion as my YT hasn't got any "long" studs at the back of the car, just the row of studs for the rear of the hood, and it certainly hasn't got any studs on the front seats (which were re-upholstered in the 60's).
Curiouser & curiouser.

Cheers,

Saul.

Dear Saul

You could solve most of your problems by consulting Brian Quarendon who purchased my concours '49 YT two years ago. By coincidence you are in the same county and I am sure he is not very far away from you (he is in Bishops Waltham tel: 01489893551). This car has all the correct tonneau set up's and correct studs. However it also has some dash studs as this car was retro fitted with a full tonneau. It will also show you every other aspect of where things should be and how they looked. You can also obtain the correct 'salt and pepper' material for the hood and tonneau in the U.K.

If you need a toolkit for this car or a full new wiring loom (with or without indicators integrated into the existing lights so as to make no changes), drop me an e-mail.
