MG MG Y Type - YT Wheel Colours

Dear All

I am aware that the correct colour for YT wheels is Sequoia Cream. However, can anyone in the UK confirm if this colour is available (or anything closely comparable)in any of the range of spray cans from Halfords or similar.

Rob King's YA rolling chassis at MG Live was finished with cream coloured wheels and when I chatted to him he mentioned that he had sprayed them with spray can and I am sure that he had mentioned the vehicle type that it was originally applied to. Unfortunately, I dont have Rob's e-mail or phone number to hand.

So if either Rob or anyone has a suggestion it would be appreciated!

Thanks

Jerry

Sorry guys I have started this thread before and all the answers were really helpful. I also followed your advice Paul and downloaded the technical spec for Sequoia Cream from the website.

The query still stands - I should just have continued it on the earlier thread!

Thanks

Jerry,

The wheels were painted professionally for me....the only bit that was!
I went through hundreds of colour samples to find a 'cream' that was neither too white or too yellow.
I chose a colour which is a VW factory colour for vehicles destined to be German taxis....I could get the code for you but I doubt that it will be available in spray cans from the like of Halfords.

However, there are a number of paint suppliers who will mix a colour to your sample and supply it in spray cans. My local paint supplier is making some Ford Ermine white for the Consul Capri at the moment.

You are welcome to come up and collect my spare and try it on the YT.

Thanks Rob

I visited a vehicle paintstore suppliers in Leamington and took along the specification downloaded from the IMGY site for Sequoia Cream.

They came up with Austin Rover Group ARG. YL6 County Cream with Brand Code 400004108

I painted the spare today and have taken a pic which I will try and forward. I'm quite pleased and it looks so much better than the red, or silver which I had thought about. The cost for a spray can with VAT was £10.81

All the best

I have finally painted all five wheels.
I guess having them shot blasted and then stove enamelled would have been the best way forward. That though would have meant getting five tyres/inner tubes both on and off.

It's surprising how many spray cans one uses - 3.5 primers and 3 top coats and 1 can of clear lacquer.

As always spraying wheels is always a problem especially with overspray onto the tyre walls. I found a packet of unused card dividers (A5 size) which are used in card index systems in phone/contact files. These I placed in the gap between the tyre/rim edge and overlapping them to provide a shield - and didn't deflate the tyre (though that might make it easier). I covered the tyre with some thick, old towels etc which did the job. Though if I was going to do it again I would get a large sheet of card to cover the wheel and cut it to cover the tyre with a centre hole the diameter and radius of the wheel to be sprayed. I placed the wheel on an old Black and Decker workbench and worked in the open with a cover over my mouth and nose (essential). I was pleased with the outcome,

However, this colour only works, in my view, for 'heavy' base colours of the car such as red, blue, black and green. Lighter body colours - cream, white and so on are probably better using a silver/aluminium finish - Mike Silk's YT is a good example.

For some reason I cant get the upload to work!
Will try later.

Thanks to David Pelham for resizing my pics.
Hopefully this will work - there are 3!

All the best Jerry

Looking good Jerry....

Are those the stainless trims Mike had at the show?

Rob
Rob King

Thanks Rob. Yes the trims are as supplied through Mike. They add a lot to the appearance of any car which is what I term visually heavy - especially balck saloons - where in my opinion the colour needs a lighter contrast. They can be irritating to fit and the dog tooth finish to the securing side can mark the wheel, though of course you can only see this when you remove them!

Sincerely

Jerry
