MG MG Y Type - YT/YA Steering Columns

There is a debate at the moment about whether the YA and YT Steering Columns are different length.

My research indicates that YT shafts are 1220mm long from the 3-ring face to the end of the nut thread (when fully compressed), while the YA are 1150mm long.

The mounting tubes are also different lengths.

I can only assume that YB are the same as YA, as I don't have access to any YB shafts to measure in Australia.

If anyone has a YT or YA Steering column on the bench at the moment, could you please confirm the lengths above.

Thanks Y-Typers

A check of the parts listings shows two different numbers for the YA and YT shafts.

Does anybody know, why there are two different length for YA and YT? I have both versions and want to use the correct one on my YT.

Tony

I can confirm, different lenght of the YT and YA collumns. I have them both on my work bench.
BUT, I am under the impression, that the shorter one of the two belongs to the YT (1150mm) and the longer One to the YA (1220mm).
Question: Am I mistaken with my assumption? I stripped the car down some 20 years ago ....

Kind regards
Anton

Anton,
I have looked at another Y-Owner's YT & YA shafts and the outside tubes were different lengths, but the main shaft was the same length.

I can measure up my YA, but my YT is currently 1500miles away, so I can't measure it up now to compare.

I think the difference is where the dashboard mounts on each car. I suspect the the Tourer Dash is further from the firewall/toeboard than the YA, but can't be sure.

If some kind soul out there can measure the distance from the toeboard panel where the column passes through, to the front face of the dash on a YT, I will do the same for my YA.

Anton,
My YA is 535mm from toeboard to front face (drivers face) of dashboard, and the outside tube finishes 620mm from the toeboard.

Hopefully someone will post YT dimensions soon.

I'll measure mine in the morning.

thank you, Gentlemen

My YT is snow-proof wrapped up and parked outside garage, since I need the garage-space to do the woodwork inside the doors.
Thus I can only measure and check all your sizes in about a month time. Thank you, anyway.
Besides that, I am sure that I got the two different lenght collums, as mentioned in Tony Slatteries intial mail.

My YT is 26 inches or 66cm from toe board to the BACK of the dash.

Hope that helps you Anton

Paul,
Can you please measure the distance from the toeboard to the end of the chrome tube - YA is 620mm.

Is the slip ring always the same distance from the rack, regardless of slip ring type (early or late) ?.

There is a hole in the inner shaft which locates the slip ring - is this hole always the same distance from the rack end ?.

There are so many ways to get the installation of the column and slip ring wrong - almost worth a story here.

Here are two outer columns both believed to come from Ys though I cannot remember which!

The longer one is 75cm or 29 1/2 inches and the shorter is 71cm or 27 9/10 inches.

Do you still need other measurements? I have 3 complete columns that are out of cars currently which are all the longer outer column and these two outer columns and one lone inner column.

Let me know if you need any other pictures/measurements. Taking measurements in the car is not necessarily going to reliable as accuracy of allowing for the firewall etc will throw you off I think.
