MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - A tyre thread!

The time has come to replace the front tyres on my ZR160.

It seems that the choice is a tad limited by the 205x45x17 size used on the car.

Anyone used another brand by any chance?

Anyone know a cheap source of the Michelin's used?

Is moving to 205x40x17 (the world and his dog make these, it seems) a practical choice?

Any feedback appreciated

Chris

There's not a lot to pick from.
Michelin, Pirelli and (I think) Yokohama.
A trawl around the internet may prove useful, I'd be interested in your findings as there isn't that much left on the fronts on my ZS.

Purchased 4 Pirelli PZeros from Micheldever last week when I was down that way. £371 including Wheel alignment, but be prepared for up to 2 hour visit as you have to queue for tyre fitting and then for wheel alignment. Having said that, service was excellent and wheel alignment kit truly impressive. Best deal I have come across. They also do good prices on other brands and if they can't get what you want then your looking at a special import.

Chris, you could try a 235/40R17 tyre - there are plenty of manufacturers of this size. The rolling circumference of the standard tyre is 1936mm and this wider tyre is 1947mm (still within the 2% recommended tolerance).

The 205/40R17 is not an option, as this will affect the speedo reading and gearing due to the significant difference in rolling circumference (1872mm).

205 to 235 section requires checks be made against contact between tyre and suspension ZR and ZS differ in this respect so both need this check, and more importantly whethere there is any contact on full lock, with some consideration for suspension compression which can easily pull tyres closer to bodywork then when at normal ride height.

I see the 235 option is 0.6% larger than standard whilst the use of 225/40 size would be undersized by 0.7%. The same clearance checks still need to be done, just to be certain.

Kuhmo do them now @ around £65 a throw, and they perform comparibly to the Mich Pilot.

What is the price difference for the Michelins?
