MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Argh! Delaminating MG badge!

Yes, the inevitable has happened. The blasted front MG badge has delaminated on our ZTT.
&^*^!

Replacement time. Is there a replacement badge that won't do exactly the same in 18months time?
Rob Bell

Yup, the rear badge on my ZS delaminated sometime ago. A very common problem. Due to the condition and mileage of my car I haven't bothered replacing it.

There is a guy on XPF that is selling stainless steel replacement badges - £25 each or £40 for a pair.

Ralph, is that enameled? If not, that is rather expensive...
Rob Bell

You can get them as enameled or just stainless steel. Would look good if you have starlight silver.

What I've done is made sure the replacement badges I've had from the dealer are covered with a sealing polymer polish. I did this for both the ZT's I've had. Both had delaminated badges when I bought them, and both only needed replacing once. Saying that I have only had the 260 seven months.

My front badge has finally started to go, but my boot badge was done under warranty about a year ago, but since, some scrote tried to nick it and scratched it.
The Xpower s/s badge (SV style) seems expensive at £40odd where I have seen it at a few trade stands recently, but the ones on XPF I think are designed for the ZR/ZS size, not sure if that will fit the ZT? The problem with expensive s/s Xpower style badges is the local lowlife...
Martin ZT

That's true Martin. Besides, fitting an X-Power badge to a diesel doesn't seem right! ROFL

Who is doing the badges over on XPF?
Rob Bell

SV front bages are way bigger than ZTs

I know as I wanted to get one formy ZT

Anyhow I have a contact who can make them up for me
in Ally or in Solid silver.

If I had a batch knocked up would any of you guys be interested in a badge that would fit the ZT which looks like the X Power badge?
Neil

slightly different, anyone know where I can get one of the 'new' type Rover bonnet badges, apart from Rover dealer (I don't want to be ripped off).?

Delaminating shows just how cheap and shoddy badge making has become (all made overseas no doubt - China again!) Course, they did delam years ago but it took years to happen!
Just like No. Plates, take a look at the state of them today - even new car plates seem to go within months.
Mega

Rob, the guy over on XPF that is selling these badges uses the handle ZRX. They are engraved with the MG logo.

The delaminating badge is definitely a not-so-shiny example of cost cutting I agree. I am sure they saved 50p on every badge made. It's very irritating. Fortunately, the badge on the F (now practically 10 years old) has badges that look practically as good as they did when I bought the car... Why oh why...

Ralph - thanks. I'll see if I can find him on XPF...

The XPF thread: http://forums.xpowerforums.com/showthread.php?t=26025

Not completely convinced myself - I rather like the enamelled standard badges. It is rather difficult to see this engraved logo...

Anyone got any other suggestions?
Rob Bell

Neil
Would be interested.
Martin ZT

Neil, solid silver sounds good! But how much?

Can your contact make enammeled badges?
Rob Bell

Silver is easy, but aluminium and even brass are possible. It's just about casting!

I was originally thinking of a copy of the X Power badge, but one that fits! but being creative I think that it would be possible to create shiney Aluminium MG bages similar to the X power ones but not quite. ie without the X power bit, which to my mind isnt that nice actually

personally I would quite like the idea of a silver one. Nobody would have to know it was silver...
but Ally would be more tea leaf resistant!
Neil

How would you prevent the metal from oxidizing? Delaminating badges are bad enough. Corroded aluminium is something else...

Besides - ZRX's S/S badges are exactly as you describe Neil, engraved silver badges similar to the X-Power item, but without the X-Power logo.
