MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Can ZR beat off the Ford St 150?

In about the mid 90's the Mangerment at Ford changed. They all went to dinner with Fag......sorry New Labour. It was made plain that Chairman Blair didn't like Hot Hatch.

Thus the Fast Fords turned into Fag Fords and those who loved and grow up on there simple but safe on the limt handling were cut adrift.

When those usless turds f*cked up Ford USA they were "Take out" and a "Old" Ford returned. There first effort the RS Focus was a pile of torque steering crap.

Nothing new there i hear you say, but at £23,000 it was TOO much. Ford even lost money on each one, however they have rediscoved there roots......the ST150 is almost here.

Just the right power, right size, foolproof handling, good brakes.......new....moden..fun..right price.

Now seeing how MGR needs ZR sales like the Home sec needs Blair what will MGR do?
Let ZR wither on the vine
Or
K2000?
Cheers

Having a minor role in a very sucessful ...no.. one of THE most succesful car companies in the world I think I would like to add my ha'porthworth.

The only way that MGR can cheaply keep market share with an increasingly old range of cars is to deliver ever increasingly greater product value. This means
same old stuff lower prices
or tune up the stuff.

guaranteeing superb best in class handling and increasingly outrageous performance are good ways to do this. The K2000 option may not be so daft!
It's all about credibility and brand perception.

in my view MGR should be developing very hot R's and S's as if their lives depended on it...which of course it does!
Also developing smaller versions which outbrake and handle their competetion. So the ZR105 comes with fullhouse braking and suspension from the ZR160.

Also they should develop a soft road 4wd ZT-T if possible from the parts bin, I am not sure that is totally possible without significant expenditure but that will be a huge sales winner!
Neil

Completely agree with you there Neil!

Top idea too - rather like the Audi Allroad...

And why not make an AWD Streetwise, to give that brand more substance?

Don't bother with R's and S's. Everyone are using those badges. Use Xs. The ZRX and then there could be a ZR XXX!
And for those Aussies who'd rather have a can of larger - the ZR XXXX ;o)
Rob Bell

Well I can tell you that the Volvo X branded cars are selling like there's no tomorrow, you try getting one!
XC90 XC70...

XR XXXX? Blimey Cobber fair Dinkum! I suppose it would be called an MG Outback, or an MG Dunny?

Neil

MG Rover are not allowed to sell 4WD cars. Something to do with the Land Rover divorce/Ford/BMW debacle.

Maybe that's because they're in short supply??? hardly see any of them in Hampshire?

(though most of them probably in Surrey/West Sussex, I would have thaought a FEW would be here!!!) Remember hearing they were having problems with the number of Chassis available to them... IIRC

IIRC it was the change in insurance premiums in the late 80s/ early 90s, coupled with a Thatcher-imposed economic depression that killed the original generation of "hot hatches", (as people couldn't afford to keep them...) Since Labour came to power we've seen the revival of the RS brand, Cosworth, V6 Renault Clios, 300bhp road-legal Rally Cars, EVEN 200bhp+ SEAT's!!! Modded Cars that make Group B Rally cars look ordinary grace the cover of car magazines that every 16-year old kid reads... I think you've got the wrong party there...
IMHO Ford just outdid themselves with the Escort Cossie (whale-tail) and realised they couldn't better it so didn't bother. As far as the Focus goes, aesthetically at least, I wish they hadn't tried...

yep all sold out!!!!

most are in USA not Surrey, but there is a huge demand all around the world for these.

Personally I would rather see leery hot hatches on the road than huge 4x4s! the time of 4x4s may be waning, particulalry with costly oil

watch out for a whole bunch of interesting smaller cars from the industry coming soon

XC50 and S30 from the Swedes, of course these will sellout very quickly too!
