MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Evaluation of the Z car range

In its current book of Road Tests on 450 cars, Automobile Magazine rates (5* maximum)
ZR=* , ZS=** ,ZT=***(certain versions only)
The 100 HP diesel is reckoned to be one of the worst in its category!
There are many competitive products which get a 3 or 4 star rating.
That is the extent of the challenge facing MGR for which all the exciting adventure with the SV,Poland,China etc don't offer much help.

Antoine,

tres interessant ...:)

IMHO, this completely undermines the credibility of the publication ..... particularly when considering some of those products awarded more stars: ****/* .... he who pays the piper .... :)

Cast your mind back over the various "Car of the Year" awards for say the past three decades or so ... some real losers there so how come they were considerd for that award anyway. One of the many mysteries of the motoring journalists' world .....:)

The challenge facing MG-R is but a single one ... to overcome blind highly subsidised prejudice. They are facing up to it and there are a few signs, small ones at the moment, that they will be more than up to the task. But, it will need a hard, long and sustained level of committment to succeed. Good luck to them. They'll need it.

John,
I find that the continental magazines tend to be less biased or" bought out" by advertisers than the English ones and their opinions are therefore more closely followed by potential buyers.

In any case the figures speak for themselves: In 1994 MGR sold 46,000 cars in France, this year
probably around 7,000.What is worse, many of the more desirable models available in the UK,are not imported here till 12 months later, (if at all),or are badly judged eg the new 160 HP turbo is too little for a ZT in the French market though it would probably go down well in a ZS.

Not only in France,Antoine
The ZT 260-still not launched, has been "on the cards" for over 18 months;a long time to insert an existing
(bought in) engine into an existing model- even if it does involve a change in traction to RWD

and follow the MG links to the 'Developement Zone' and have a look at the XPower ZT - reckoned to be out in 2003!

I think I'd rather that MGR sorted the product out before releasing it prematurely and getting its customers to perform the endurance testing. This is what BL did in the bad old days - and absolutely would not work now.

As MGR enthusiasts, I am sure we are crossing our fingers collectively for the future and some hopefully superb cars.
Rob Bell

I agree fully Rob & have also been told of a date in Spring 2003 Ted
However several magazines had it listed in their annual calendars for June 2002 and there have been
no significant new Saloon product launches on the continent for a heck of a long time !
antoine

Spoke to MGR people at the motor show yesterday. The latest release dates are (and I saw the dates in black and white for myself)
ZT 260 - early spring 2003
ZT 385 - approx 2 months later.
JLD

Are we to expect a V8 75 JLD?
