MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Happy x'mas mr labrador

Just great,
Delivering presents this evening a dog ran out infront of the ZS, we were at about 60mph. One hell of a bang. We stopped and walked back to check that the dog was not suffering, as it was dark we could not see it. Found a house that had a dog out and they came with torches. No dog. A couple of minutes later the dog ran out of a hedge as if nothing had happened. The front bib on the ZS is smashed and we're pi**ed off.
Happy christmas everyone.

Isn't running over a dog a reportable incident ? And aren't all dogs out loose s'posed to have a collar?
Find out whose dog it is and claim off the owners. I f they don't have public liability insurance, claim thru' the small claims court.
David

Leave the poor lab alone. He was just going out for a walkies. Accidents happen, at the end of the day, if the dog was ok thats all that matters. A front spoiler can be repaired/replaced, but someones pet cannot be easily replaced. Yes i have a labrador...

Another vote for the dog! In this season on goodwill I am more delighted that the dog was OK than worried that a bit of plastic on a car got a ding!

Cheers

Not sure if you still need to report running over a dog. This was the case when dogs required a licence, but as they don't need one now this may not be the case.
Perhaps someone with legal knowledge could enlighten us. Never know when it could happen to any of us!
JLD

Why were you doing 60mph in a 40mph zone. Poor dog, you should be ashamed.:-)

Perhaps the aforementioned dog was returning home after a day drinking and womanising down at the pub?

Cut him some slack, it's Christmas!

You'd be doing the dog a favour by suing the owner - they might be more careful about it getting out. Otherwise next time it gets hit it might not be so lucky. If they have pet insurance, it includes third party cover.

Legally, the owner is responsible for any damage the dog causes (not the case for a cat). As I understand it, there is no obligation to "report" the accident, if the dog is okay, or if they owner is located. But you are obliged to stop and help a dog (or sheep, etc.) if you hit it. Again, this isn't the case for a cat, which legally is a wild animal.
Sarah

Okay, Okay....
We too were happy that the dog was fine.
Yes the owners should be more responsible.
This was not in a 40mph zone(or I would have been doing 45)
The dog owners really did not seem too bothered about the fact that their dog might have been dead.
The owners would be responsible for the damage, but. this very young couple were working on a run down little house on christmas eve evening to make it into their first home, It would be harsh of us take this amount of money off them. They did offer to sort out the bill.
We beleive that it would have been a reportable accident if the dog had been injured.

Nice post, N & A

After all, it is Christmas!

>We beleive that it would have been a reportable accident if the dog had been injured.<

How did you know the dog wasn't injured, did you take him to a vet for a check up? He probably dropped dead just after you left and his uncaring owners were too busy fixing up their run down cottage to notify you.

Just so those of you who drive around the countryside trying to kill poor innocent animals on Christmas Eve know the form, the following is the appropriate extract from the Highway Code:

If you are involved in an accident which causes damage or injury to any other person, vehicle, animal or property, you MUST

stop

give your own and the vehicle owner's name and address, and the registration number of the vehicle, to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring them

if you do not give your name and address at the time of the accident, report the accident to the police as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any case within 24 hours.

Mike West Midlands,
You really are a bundle of joy this festive season aren't you?
"Trying to kill dogs" You sound as if you think we hit that dog deliberately.
