MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - How many were made?

As many of you know I have a pretty unique ZT260 in Solar red with red dash and Grid wheels. I have only ever seen other V8s at dealerships, none on the road.

Now that MGR has stopped making them I wonder how many phase 2 ZT260s were actually made? I hear rumours that the 341 (?) phase one ZT260 made wasnt surpassed!!
Neil

Answer

650 in total all V8s
that includes 271 03 type
50 Rover V8s
and all the T-T versions

...so about 250 or the same as the 03 version, so the 04 version is just as rare!

definitive numbers coming!

Neil,
Your back tyres are illegal!
Saw them on Saturday at Brands Hatch....

No Martin they are solar panels for a sex machine!!

New 245/40R18s arriving soon

As are early X power exhausts!

Neil

You'll hate those exhausts - they turn fuel into noise.

Spend the money on Throttle Bodies or a Supercharger!

you might be right

but let's see shall we

Neil,

Pleased you've got what you wanted! Be seriously interested in your thoughts!

Neil et all,

I know that when I last spoke I had accounted for around 650 as a total but since then I have been digging out other bits and pieces and also looking at quite a number of cars (for other reasons) being disposed of by the Administrators.

The higest VIN I have found is on a new (very new)Rover V8 Tourer which carries 000851 and it is reasonable to interpret that this will be very close to the last one of the X12 models made.

Further information indicates that the standard proceedure of starting from a specific VIN was not followed with the X12 as there was a degree of polorisation of two camps regarding the launch of the ZT260. One camp said it was running late and no further delay could or should be carried, yet the other camp said that because the 2004 model year updates were so close that the delay until the new model launch would be better. History shows the launch now camp won and there will be a number of equally polorised comments from the buyers of these cars!

The bottom line is that all information points to the numbering started with 001 rather then the common 101 or 251 which applied to other models. With the numbers issued to cars on a sequential basis with no gaps known then the total count is certainly no less than 851. The information indicating 'around 50 Rover V8's' still stands.

As with all this sort of information at such a time it is 'provisional' pending confirmation (if that can be achieved) from production records.

As a side note there are only around 600 of the 2005 model year TFs, a great improvement on the older models as I had one over a couple of weeks that included the April collapse.

Many of the 'second hand' cars (second hand by definition rather than condition in many cases) have been passing through the hands of the Phoenix dealerships still trading (in Administration) and I have been at both Coventry and Edwards of Stratford (In administration), Those looking for some good cars may wish to visit the BCA Auctions at Brighouse this Wednesday.

So the V8 is a very rare beast!

saw 4 this morning at Trident, is this the largest gathering of ZTV8s outside of the factory?

851 is a little higher than anticipated and it makes you wonder if there are any that will be involved in the bankrupcy sales, or how little/much they go for

Neil

Hello Neil/Roger

One of those four was mine, minus the front seat no doubt.

Roger I can cross reference your comment mine is number 202 so did not start at 251. Driving a V8 estate at the moment which is 622.

Hello Roger. I have been looking at these threads with some interest. My V8 was registered in Dec 2003 (a phase 1 model) and is no. 127. Do you know when production of the V8's started?

Neil, how are the exhausts?

Guy
Guy Napthine

Guy the exhausts are... louder than anticipated!
but in my book that's fine, my boy LOVES IIITTT!!! the car has moved from exec limo to muscle car in one easy move. well easy for us, not so much for Peter!!
OUCH!

My V8 is no 541

I had a discussion about these V8s with the senior management at Volvo Cars last night over a rather nice dinner and a drink or three.

They say that the MG V8 is a fabulous car, simply stunning ! they wish that they had the balls to make something like it ( I'm not saying anything other than watch this space!)

They also said to me "NEVER sell it unless it's for big money!"
They view the cars along the same lines as Bristols and the Yank V8 powered beheomoths of the past! Gordon Keebles etc A real classic and an object of desire!

Jeez !! Passion from a Swede!

Even though I almost bought one last year, the thought of getting a ZT260 just will not die. Maybe soon I'll happen across the right spec at the right price.

Or should I just get an SV?
Adrian

I saw the rarest of them all on Saturday afternoon.

Over lunch in a local pub my wife sugested calling in at Edwards of Stratford on our way home to see if they had any of these elusive bargins.

There in the showroom we found a Rover 75 V8 Estate!!

It had a sold label on it and no price.

We were on the look out for a new ZT-T 190+ for £10k.

No such luck.
David Witham

Rover V8 estate mega-rare they only made 50 Rover V8's in total
Neil

Really really want a ZTT260 - I know someone who bought 'new' at 18k. Not entirely sure what the spec was - but I think that it was an SE...

Would be an easy choice, but for the fact that our ZTT CDTi is just so perfect for our 'practical' needs right now! :o(

Maybe I'll look again in a couple of years time when the current car needs replacing?
Rob Bell

They are going to become rare Rob so would not wait too long. I've got my 260 for life now. The only thing I would consider in the future is a supercharger for it. You read things about people saying that it is the dogs bl.... and they are not wrong. While you have the chance get a test drive and you will see what they are talking about. I had a ZTT260 estate for a few weeks while mine was being worked on and it was as practical as any other ZTT so you would not know the difference from yours........other than it pulls like a train, it has that deep deep deep exhaust note at low revs, it has the V8 rumble when travelling at speed, and you don't have to change gear that often due to the torque. Also you will not use your radio that much and the drivers window is normally down.

Tim
Tim Hayton

Tim - you're not making my life any easier mate ;o) ROFL
Rob Bell

There must be something in the water around here with Guy, Tim and me seriously hooked on ZTV8 muscle. Tim is right, after this where do you go? AMG mercs at vast money? Bristols?

Anyhow the effect is contagious because Volvo will soon be launching a new V8 S80 .
4.4 litre 60 degree V8 courtesy of Yamaha!

Neil

I assume that the Volvo is front wheel drive?

Tomas
Tomas

Because of the power output it would be either four or rear wheel drive Tomas. I guess.
