MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Mega Eats Humble PIE! :(

Mega eats Humble PIE!

Well, I am one to give out criticism, but here is a case where I am afraid that its Humble pie time for Mega. For some time I have "Mentioned" the Ford ST 170. This was Ford answer to all things Hot. Well Ladies and Gents, its NOT!

Yes its got good brakes, handling is ok, but you need performance as well. I have had a quick go in it and it's SLOW! Ford has placed themselves in the same position as Proton did with the GTI. A car that handles well but couldn't pull the skin of a rice puddling!

If you got a low insurance group to match this low performance, you could make a case for it, but NO! Group 15, the bloody Honda Type "R" is 16/17. If the ford was cheaper you could make a case, but NO! A loaded one is £18,000+!!!! You could buy a discounted Scooby for that!

I think Ford is being far too greedy, I bet you could beat one in a Golf PD150. Lets not forget that you can also have a loaded Cooper-S and money left over. Just think if MGR do face lift the ZS/ZR and they do as good a job as the TF, I think they could drop kick Ford in the BALLS!

Even if they don't, Ford will have Vauxhall coming to the party with the Astra Turbo. I think to honourable thing to do is to say that I got it wrong, big time. I didn't think that Ford would be this stupid!

Humbly your's

Wasn't the Escort GTi the same though?, can't comment on the handeling, but the owner I spoke to said it just didn't have any power.

Accepted, the Escort GTi wasn't supposed to be as uprated as the ST170, but the I guess the Focus has more weight than the ZR, which doesn't weigh all that much more than the TF.

I could have got out and run quicker!, Ok it did have a bit more torque lower down than my 306 GTI-6 but it was leaden in its engine responces. I think the main trouble is that its got a cast iron block( i think/not sure) and thus its heavy.

If we where talking say £16,000 to £16,000 all in and it was group 12 ish than may be. I have a feeling that Ford are in for a BIG problem sales wise here.

Still, I doubt it, the thing with ford is that the RS owners club peeps are a loyal bunch and will probably still go for one if they can. The Focus isn't that bad a car, TBH. I wouldn't have one though, far too many of them around driven by sales reps! (We have two in the company I work for - focu-i that is, not sales reps!)

At the end of the day, it'll be interesting to see what the press say and what they pit it again - the ZS or the ZR. MG say the ZS is against the Focus, not the ZR, but the ZR is closest to size (I would guess).

btw - Who told you that the seats in the TF were being changed?

Hi Steve
It was on the channel 4 web site about 2 weeks ago.
4 car i think its called. The only remaining grip from the Auto mags is the hight of the seats. If they fix the TF, than i am sure they would do the same for the ZS/ZR.

As for the greedy Ford, well the 172 had a waiting list when it first came out, there giving them away now! (Sort of)

The Escort GTi was basically a rebadged "Si" to use up parts before the Focus came along, std engine, std trim.....
