So, 30 secs behind the winning Astra. In my books that is a successful first appearance. What say you?

Reid had a stop go penalty in there somewhere too, so things could have been better.

Don't think the Astras are the issue - so far ahead of the others at the moment it's silly. But to be more than competitive with the Pug's, Alfa's and Lexi is very good indeed first time out.

Closing the gap on the Astras for next year will be tricky indeed.

I was watching at Silverstone this weekend, and was very, very impressed. Reid seemed to get into a spot of bother in the sprint, and Hughes was spun into the gravel, and in the second race Reid had a drive through penalty when his team could only change one wheel due to being unable to remove the other (anyone who's ever dismantled the hub on a Maestro will sympathise :) ). Other than that they performed spectacularly. In terms of laptimes, Reid and Soper's Peugeot were very similar, but Reid was noticeably smoother and faster through the infield section, and could take a much better line. Plus they blew the doors off both Alfas and Erdos's Lexus - not a slow car.

So, some teething troubles, but an extremely promising start. My MG flag will be making a proud reappearance at Donington - here's to a trouble-free run to really show them what MG can do :)

It all sounds quite promising to say that the others have had a year or more(in vauxhalls case) to develope their cars . Wanted see them at silverstone but had other things to do sadly but iam going to get to donnington if kills me!

I've scanned some of my pictures, the rest will be sent to Saftey Fast, hopefully for publication, but here is one to wet your appetite:

Two things form my watching of the cars was the very impressive consistency throughout the race and the balance that seems to be better towards the latter part of the 30 lap race. Clearly there was no issue of tyre overheating or excess wear otherwise that balance and speed would have been lost. I also understand that the fastest laps towards the race end were by the MGs.

I expect some more progress to be made with some of the specs before te season ends, but perhaps not the major steps forward that might be hoped for. THe whole aim for the team is to assault the championship in 2002 and to be successful they are building slowly to that end. I expect that some of the data that will already have been aquired and additional data from the rest of the season may not be acted upon until 2002 technical specs are confirmed. There is no point spending heavily on something to make an improvement only to find it won't then meet the regs.
