MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MGZR wins on Top Gear

Well, what can I say?

Well done MGR!

Beat the Honda (yuk!) too, plus the Festa and Micra
Meglomaniac

They even managed to comment on the performance, over 2 seconds faster on a lap of their track.

It might be a spiced up Rover,
but its what people want, really really want :-)

Part X-posted From "MG on TV" thread:

You could have blown me down with a feather when the MG-ZR emerged top of the group test on Top Gear tonight .... Quite complimentary about the car too - 2 seconds faster than any of the others. In that group, that's almost 2 warp factors folks ... :-)

Makes a refreshing change.

Earlier, on ITV3 Midlands 615-645pm, devoted entirely to Rover Car Company over the years. Good content mix and not the usual "look how dreadful BMC-BL-ARG-Rover-MG-R have been since the year dot". Nice to see the Rover Turbine Le Mans car footage. I remember seeing that in action back in the 1960s. Impressive stuff.

And old Jeremy C was even positive - in that at least he didn't try to rubbish his co-presenter's positive views of the MG ZR - unlike when they showed a new bargain-priced high-performance version of the Vauxhall Astra and he kept pointing to the Vauxhall badge on the Astra photo on the monitor behind them, basically saying that 'because it was a Vauxhall it was rubbish'. Ouch!

VX: 200ish BHP, 0-60 8 seconds.... I think I can understand JC's comment - something wasn't right...

Good to see the ZR in a favourable light (maybe a new interior will happen on a "facelift" later...)

Interesting to hear the emphasis on how the performance suddenly makes all the gizmos you get on the other cars seem irrelevant. After all, that was exactly what MGR were aiming for with the Z's wasn't it...
David Bainbridge

I thought it was a know fact that JC does not like Vauxhalls, because they refuse to give him any cars or any "fees", it would appears MGR have realized that this is a bad statagy and have given him a decent "bung". Well Mr Towers knows a trick or two.

Bob,

with regard to what has gone on with the Beckham's recently, concerning Posts on BB's and them suing the people concerned. I would be a little bit careful about what you write. The internet is not a libel free zone! Not in the UK anyway.

Sorry you are quiet correct, I meant to say, perhaps and alledgedly!

Even off camera JCs comments were very positive about MGR.In particular the ZS180
:-) As for Vaux 200bhp, 0-60 7secs,got that wrong somewhere I think (must have lead in the petrol)!!!!

Even the old TG was very complementary about the Z's, if you remember. 'Two thirds of an M3 for half the price' etc. etc.

It really does show that a car company can save a lot of cash by fully exploiting the platforms they have before they launch into the eye-wateringly expensive process of designing new ones.

When I first heard that MGR were 'tarting up' up the 25, 45 and 75, I really thought it was a very grim sign for the company - desperation almost. How wrong I was. I certainly never dreamed that I'd ever buy one!

So now, in the UK, MGR have the biggest selling sportscar and the biggest selling thing-in-the-class-of-the-ZR (Can't remember what they call it - hot hatch? - I read it somewhere recently). The ability to make sports versions of any future Rover products could well make the difference between survival and collapse for MGR.

David Bainbridge

David, I really and trully hope that is enough to see them through 2003.
Until that is, the new models come online in 2004.
I really think that MG Rover need to now concentrate all of their time, money and engineers on getting the 45 replacement finished and released as quickly as possible. That is whilst still maintaining design and build quality of the 75/ZT. A tall order in any manufacturers book!

The Metro was originally supposed to of been the make or break car for AR Group back in 1980. That would seem to be somewhat overstated compared to how important the new car(s)is/are.

I am amazed to hear that Clarkson and Co have put a British car and especially an MGR at the top. I thought the only three letters in his mind were those of German origin. Inspite of his positive comparison with the M3 it shows that he still can't get rid of this addiction!!

Does Top Gear get repeated later in the week? I would love to see it.

The man (JC) appears to be very pro Brit at the moment!
