MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - New car collection advice

Collecting my nice new bright yellow ZR this Saturday,

I'd appreciate suggestions on thing to check/look out for on collection, also advice on running in....

May take her to the Lutterworth meeting on Sunday, or Matching Green (if I get out of bed early enough!)

Cheers
Andy

(and please no Mega BS about trackers)

Andy

What, you don't want to know that there IS a method to nick a ZS/ZR? Or no, you don't want to know that both DL and Tesco demand "Tracker"?
Mega.

Andy,

Before picking the new car up, make a simple but thorough check list of things to look at. Allow and take your time. A quick lunch half hour then back to work will not be enough. Dont be in any hurry to start her up and drive away. Not simply obvious ones to look for like the odd paint chip or dented panel, but open all doors and boot and close gently to see if OK. Operate all windows both manual and electric. Any stains or marks on interior. Try all those switches and see they do what they're supposed to. Not a bad idea to look under the bonnet and check the levels before start-up. Look under the car too. Not unknown for cars to slip of the transporter and damage the underside - actually seen it happen - and maybe even a leak showing already. Can and does happen with ANY make of car. All well then start her up.

Re running in:

Ask the dealer for advice here. Be patient. Do read the guidelines in the manual. You may have forgotten some of the stuff. Several long runs are preferable to many short ones. Even for a diesel, use all the gears frequently to always keep the engine spinning freely. High revs only VERY briefly if you must just try should not be harmful. Sustained higher revs at motorway speeds could be very harmful in both long and short term for a new engine. Even more harmful could be to labour the engine in too high a gear at lower revs which is easy and tempting to do in a diesel. When approaching a long steady incline, drop down into 4th or even 3rd to keep that engine spinning freely and avoid labouring the engine.

Here in Glos., yellow ZRs are very popular. Still not seen a yellow ZS though even at the local dealership.

Finally, Theydon Bois AND Dudley .... that's some drive ... you got a big address or what? ... :o))

It might seem daft, but make sure you get all the options you asked for. Check it's got either the space saver/or IMS. Make sure you have the radio manuals, imobiliser codes. Check you have the locking wheel nut key and the the extraction tube for those caps that fit over them and the tool for removing the wheel centres. If you asked for matts make sure you have them. etc, etc.

By the way, Mega, Direct Line and Tesco Insurance are effectively the same outfit, so that brings the total of tracker-demanding companies to, er, one.

Mega,

you might also like to know there is a dealer fix for the Security!

shame there ain't a fix for you mate,
the guy is asking for some sensible feedback so go back to your Honda BBS and dream on - nuff said.

Thanks for the responses, we'll see how it goes! only a few more hours till I pick her up!! (And already booked in for the Silverstone parade laps!)

bit strange tho, the registration doc has come through, says it's a four seater - is this anything to be concerned about, as there's five seatbelts?

Cheers

John, saw a yellow ZS180 this afternoon at Fosse Park (Leicester)shopping centre. First (yellow) one I have seen in the flesh.
Must say it looks very nice indeed. Still prefer the Blue one though.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, I have always thought that diesel, unlike petrol engines, should be driven normally from the start, otherwise you run the risk of glazing the bores. Obviously be sensible, ie. check levels regularly whilst running in and don't redline from the off, but someone put me right.

So long as you don't be silly about it you should have fun - enjoy it!

gicut - you're spot on mate :-)
