MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - New MG ZT 180 Sport Auto announced

Release immediate
February 25, 2002

MG ZT 180 SPORTS AUTO

A new ‘180 Sports Auto’ now complements the performance MG ZT range, providing an automatic choice between the popular 5-speed manual ZT 160 and ZT 190 models. Using the acclaimed 2.5-litre KV6 quad-cam alloy engine, the 180 Sports Auto is specified as standard with the transverse-mounted 5-speed JATCO automatic gearbox.

Two levels of specifications are available; the ZT 180 and a ZT+ 180 with enhanced features that include ATC air conditioning, rear electric windows, CD autochanger and aerodynamic boot lid spoiler. Prices for the ZT 180 start at £20,995 on-the-road and £21,695 for the ZT+ 180. The ZT-T estate is available for an additional £1000.

True to MG’s sports pedigree, the MG ZT makes a strong visual impact with a purposeful stance and style. The aerodynamic features and various chassis dynamic elements have been developed to influence handling qualities to produce a real sports-driving characteristic.

A body coloured aerodynamic rear spoiler is available on the MG ZT saloon models, which has been harmonised with the front bumper design to substantially reduce aerodynamic lift, benefiting straight-line stability, controlling high-speed lane change characteristics and increasing high-speed braking efficiency. Rear bumpers incorporate a stainless steel heatshield, surrounding the twin stainless steel large-bore exhaust tailpipes tuned for low back pressure and to produce a characteristic sports sound.

Additional standard features include twin front and side (thorax) airbags, ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), alarm and immobiliser, driver’s height and lumbar adjustment, remote central door locking, electric front windows and door mirrors, air conditioning, pollen filter and 18" alloy wheels.

Enhanced MG ZT+ 180 models feature automatic temperature controlled (ATC) air-conditioning, electric rear windows, CD autochanger and an aerodynamic enhancing rear boot spoiler on saloon, and an integrated load restraint net system on ZT-T models, as standard equipment.

The MG ZT saloon is a product from a brand famously dedicated to sports car motoring, competing in a sector where it will be recognised for its performance, appearance, equipment specification and pricing value. Competitors include Alfa 156, Lexus IS200, Jaguar X-TYPE and BMW 3 Series and sports orientated versions of the Saab 9-3, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class and Volvo S60.

Hi Dave
It's good to see you about, any new MINI storys?
I was told today that Vauxhall (Up here in LIVERPOOL) have been NICKED testing the new Astra Turbo. I can't comfrin the story as yet. I will let you know

Mega.
Mega

Hey, Paul Fucito!!!

An automatic ZT. Perfect American spec - as most of our countrymen think that shifting for one's self some sort of "down market", dreadful thing.

Are we getting ever so much closer??
John Z

Hehe, drove this on Sunday - very, very nice car :D

Did you know that the auto box could also fit the ZS? Hmm, do I forsee a ZS180 auto before long? ;)

Steve.
Steve Childs

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Hehe, drove this on Sunday>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Point being?
Rock & A Hardplace

It's an AUTO! so what!only FAGS and MGF owners like Auto's!

Mega:- Voted Twat of the year 2002 by the MGF owner's club.
Mega

Say, Mega what do you say, you, me, ma Z3 and a BIG tub of axle grease....
glynnis

Mega old chap…… I see from your postings that you put on the bottom of each one thread you’re a twat and that you have been given this honour by the MGF owners club.

I hate to say this but it would appear you’re a bigger twat that you first thought, you see there is no such thing as the MGF owners club. This is a BBS for all M.G. owners. What a BIMBO.
cecil kimber

"It's an AUTO! so what!only FAGS and MGF owners like Auto's!"

And disabled drivers, like someone very close to me!!!!! so shut the f**k up!!!
Neil Turner

I am in complete agreement with Mega about automatics, they are only of interest to the sort of woozes who go on about sitting comfortably and whinging on about their backs hurting. Big girls everyone!
Patrick

Thank Patrick!
Fags all of them! mind you i did drive a ZT 2 days ago and thought that the engine would suit a auto.

Glynins
Hmmm......Don't know what to make of this, more details but becareful not to worry DOT ;)
Mega

I don't normally post on this board (I drive a maestro auto), but I'm in agreement with neil turner.

Mega, Patrick..I have this to say...if you think I drive an auto for my relaxation and for no good reason, may I request that you mail me to arrange for me to "test drive" your cars? I'm SURE I can mangle your gearboxes and clutches...no strength in my clutch leg you see..:)

Still...it'd be nice to see how long a gearbox can last without one..and as for whingeing..I wouldn't be complaining..;)

Next time you want to poke fun...(which I have no problem with), be aware of others...please? Mega..congrats on the award mate..I watched that with amusement..very well worked for..:)
karl

M. Schumacher's F1 Ferrari is near as dammit an automatic .... big girl's blouse eh lads? Due to technology advances, those modern F1 gearchanges are faster than any human could coordinnate clutch/throttle/gear operation .... ever.

Actually, some autos provided you've sussed 'em out can be a joy to drive .... IMHO of course ... :)
John McFeely

John
Its nothing like a road going Auto! No toque converter for a start. I agree that autos can rip, but only with the aid of a large engine (V8/V12).
We must bring you up to date on what's what. By the way John i see Suzi are about start selling a "SEMI-Auto" based on their bike engines!

Mega, Patrick,

My nan drives an Auto, not cos she can't drive a manual, but cos her left ankle gets swollen. My dad drives an Auto, not cos he can't drive manuals, but cos 80% of his driving is on the M25 where its makes sense to have an auto in the standing traffic.

Are you both saying that you can only enjoy driving if:

a. You do not have a phyiscal disability preventing you having a manual

b. The type of driving you do makes having an Auto alot easier

c. You are not disabled??

Ok, so my nan's Sunny 1.6 doesn't go like Sh*t of a shuvle, but my dad's Galaxy 2.8V6 with 5 speed Auto and tiptronic (204bhp) will out-run most cars upto 2.5litre.

Obviously if you ever have a physical problem preventing you driving a manual you will give up driving all together???? ......Thought not!!!

Neil

BTW, I drive a manual, always have, and always will until I can't (but I am only 25), but I can tell you, on my way to work some days on the M25 i'd kill for an Auto.
Neil Turner

Trying to have a subtle dig does not work with you lot does it?

My point was that Mega being anti automatic was as rational as going on about seat comfort - and who do we know who always goes on about seat comfort......

I can see the point of automatics and therefore have two cars - one of which is an automatic.

Cheers

Patrick

"I can see the point of automatics and therefore have two cars - one of which is an automatic. "

Thats ok then....LOL
Neil Turner

Patrick, tut tut - I would have hoped you'd at least have a chauffeur ;-)
David

The closest you can get to Mr. Schumakers car without being mega rich is the Alfa 156 Selespeed, a manual 'box, with assisted changes. Could this be the best of both worlds?
Tony

Patrick, if it helps I got the connection regarding Mega and seat discomfort.

This also goes for the new Fiat Stilo Abarth, the BMW M3 SMG and a few other auto opertated manual boxes :-)
