MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - 'Old faithful's' Last day ....

Our Rover Montego 1.6LX family runabout for the past thirteen years is nearing the end of the line. It's MoT expires tomorrow and as my sons have grown up with the car, we'll all be sad to see it go. No doubt it would easily pass another MoT (I've looked after it mechanically since day one once outside warranty) but its a little battle scarred and tatty bodywise now. I've used it for my 25 mile round trip to work for the past few days to reduce the fuel in the tank. Yesterday, I took it up one of the local steep hills and the motor, despite 120,000 miles, easily went up to 6000 rpm and sounded as sweet as the day we got it. Son Martin, now 18, will have the task of driving it on it's last journey to a local breakers once we've removed many of its useful bits.... and there are lots. I just wish I could transfer the gearbox and brakes to one of my other cars as they're the best bog-standard Montego ones I've ever driven. I had a word with the Breaker Boss and he said I can remove whatever I like from it once there.

Still it's an ill wind and all that .... we're lining up a replacement for it .... an MGZS is top of the list and is a certain replacement provided my wife likes it after an extensive test drive. Me? I'll still creep about in the old turbos ... :O))

John, if the '89 1.6 Montego est. taxi I rode home after an evenings merriment over the yuletide was anything to go by, you are retiring it a tad early. This had 236k up, with a head gasket being the only engine problem the driver said.

What kind of a pernicious act is 'intesting in a Ford'? Is there a law against it? Should there be? Is MEGA human?

John,

I remember back in Jan 1990 taking delivery of a new Montego 2.0L company car. It was British racing green over grey. A few months later I bought my wife an ex company Montego 2.0GSi with full leather interior to run about in. It was also BRG over grey. For a few months we both used BRG Montego's, until I changed my Monty saloon for an estate. As at the time I worked for part of the Unipart organisation the choice of car was either Montego or Maestro, and I remember going down to the Cowley plant to pick up at least 2 company Montys that I had in the early 1990's.

They were ultra reliable, plenty in our company fleet ran to 100K+ miles with nothing more than regular servicing.
These days I hardly ever see a Monty on the road around here, and I can't remember when I last saw a MG Monty.

Still if you replace your Monty with a ZS TDi that should be good for the next 1/4 million miles at least !
