MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Please Mr Site Administrator - time for moderation!

Hi

I think we are all getting fed up with anonymous postings or others posting with incorrect names. I know it can be fun - but it is now getting quite silly. I do not prophes to know much about BL/JRT/Rover/MGR but it is good to have sensible threads and a little banter with the knowledgeable types. However, these people a reluctant to post, as they know the thread will become hijacked to suit anotherindividuals needs on Z Saloons and MGR Company Forums.

Is there any merit in making this a "logged on" Forum so we know who is posting? Or at least the posts have a consistent name?

I subscribe to another site that like this one is open to anyone BUT the main difference is after every posting it shows the IP address the posting came from - now I know this is not a full proof method of stopping obnoxious idiots writing to these boards but at least it would show us where they are!

That'll work - it's enough of a method to stop the
sort of stupidity that this great Forum is experiencing!

If I had the knowledge I would set up such a Forum on my site!

Totally agree,i have'nt been on this BBS for long and already i'm fed up with people hijacking threads with inane comments and sending the subject matter into oblivion,it's time it was stopped.Log In is the way forward.

This is NOT an advert for a mailing list I setup, but at least it's moderated (since running I don't think the moderators have had to any take action).

See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MG-Rover

The only trouble is with the mailing lsit type of Forum is the constant mails you MAY get if it become popular. However you can go to web only mode or digest mode to suit. Maybe worth a look.

Jerry and guys listen up. What ever "Counter measures" you try to take will have two out comes:-

1. People such as myself WILL find away around them.
2. Real people who you want to meet would not bother going though all the hassle. Thus you would not get to meet "New Blood"
3. some of these idots have a point to make, please tell me if i am wrong in what i say about the ZR, MGF.
You know i am not.
4. As the old army saying has it Tracer works both ways!
If you do decide to go down the mailing list etc fine, people like my self will play the game.
Mega

Moderation is not the answer. Per user killfiles work much better.

I read along, I see somebody that I really would rather never hear from again, I say "kill". That user dies as far as I care.

This will only work well if anonymous posting is disallowed, and only to a limited amount. If plonkers like Mega want to continue to make asses of themselves, at least they will have to create new accounts every time they do it.

Even better, those that still enjoy the repetition certain induhviduals (ahem) seem to spout can do so without the rest of us suffering it.

MeGa the Boy

Of course you will get round it - not difficult even for you!

One question though is WHY?

You need to mail the administrator!!
If you dont I will. I dont think I have ever risen to any of MEGAs comments, and if everyone else did the same he would go away.
This is my 1st & last comment on the subject!

I'm new to the board and have obviously not had your self control!

Don't know the administrator - if you do it maybe better coming from you. Otherwise I'll gladly do it!

There are already two mailing lists for MG of which Yahoo is one, Team.net is the other and generates typically 10 times more mailings for MG (which excludes V8s) alone. I suggest we don't need another one, and I would hate to see the demise of this BBS. On the Team.net mailing list there occur from time to time threads such as 'should we allow For Sale ads' to which the response is frequently 'You have a Delete key, hit it'. It has already been suggested that we simply ignore anyone (the name escapes me) that persists in making a nuisance of themselves. For me, that covers it.

Paul,

Yes, agreed. Those are the lines I suggest we proceed along.
John McFeely

Myabe from now on - use a consistant e-mail address - phantom's can make them up but for how long?

Being new to this arena but having read many of the previous postings it becomes evident that those using this site fall into 2 main catagories
1. Those with a genuine passion for MGs, who are mainly, but not exclusivly, owners
and
2. Those who just want to criticise that which they often don't own and probably never will.

I'll let you make your own minds up about which catagory people fall into.
JD

Treat the BBS like a tv set or newspaper. Just page down or skip the entries you don't like.

Scarily simple!

Chris

I am afraid there is also a third category of people on the site,JD
ie those who enter a serious,interesting thread and write rubbish-which is then taken up by others writing more rubbish so that the whole thing becomes useless;
Please tell me how grown up ,reasonably decent men (I presume!),can afford to waste their(work ?)time
in this way.
andrew

A problem with the Yahoo groups method of working is everyones email address is publicly available leaving you wide open to all kinds or rubbish, viruses and junk mail.

I know people often leave their address on here but I prefer not to, partly because although I'm allowed access during work hours and any abuse will see that priviledge taken away.
AndyW

I agree with the general opinion....

I know I go on about me SEAT Leon sometimes, but those who know me (Kelvin etc) also know I've been involved with the MGOC, MGCC and MGM group for 3 or 4 years now, and still own 3 Montegos.

I hope I haven't upset anyone with my
comments, infact more so, I have probably upset the SEAT forum guys when I told them that Channels 4's Driven program was right to award the MGZS higher than the Leon.

If I had the money my car collection would grow to include a ZR160, ZS180 and a ZT-T190 :-)

Are but… Neil, woulds your Julie allows it to grow, if you gets me drift?
cecil kimber

Well there is a place for tomfoolery on this site...Flame Wars.

Then again Mega does come up with some good points. It is all very well to like MGs but the brand does have to appeal to more than just enthusiasts. MGR must make a viable, quality product if it is to survive. Criticism cannot be ignored. However it might help if we tried to be reasonably constructive too.
Nicodemus

I see that the Mynheer Rover forum (BBS type) is going to be shut down due to numerous 'nasty and unhelpful' postings.
Gary
Gary Boxall

Cecil, me Julie wouldn't have a say in it :-)
Well accually, when I said to her that I'd like to get a ZS to keep as a low mileage fun car, her reaction was...."let me keep it", yeah right!!!! LOL
