MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Problem with type'R' Honda

I can't drive it slowly!
Just about at 400 miles and suddenly the car engine became a lot more free revving. I try to behave, but i keep hitting the Rev limter at 8,600 RPM!

Oh i am enjoying it, "Dusted" a pair of BMW's this morning, Oh bliss!
Cheers

Whats the running in period on a Honda?
Or is it bench run?
Dot

MEGA - restrain yourself ... :O)

It will pay dividends in the longer term - that is if you plan to keep the car for a few years. I know someone who used his Honda engine too early and lived to regret it bitterly .....
John McFeely

Thats why I asked. It's a good idea to build revs up slowly - after following the running in instructions in your car manual.

Although it might be quite ironic if he blew a head gasket!
Dot

Honda tec guys simply say don't over revit in the higher gears. I seen only 125 mph so far, hope to improve on this.

I love the car, it can be diffacut to drive meduim speeds because the low mass flywheel does not retain much power. The faster it goes the better, in the 306 the air presure would get under the car and it would "float" at speed.

Hi John
Just got a friends MG Metro wheel retrimed, looks lovely. I will give it to Simon tonight.

Dot, we must have dinner somtime...Soon!

>>>>>>, it can be diffacut to drive meduim speeds because the low mass flywheel does not retain much power<<<<<<<<<<<

Who fed you with that BS? You'll find it's because the engine produces bugger all torque low down and doesnt hit peak torque till something stupid like 5000rpm...
Dave

Not so Dave, here is a quote from Autoexpress.

"while we are on the subject, lets lay to rest the myth that high- reving Hondas have no torque." "Yes, they perform better at jigh revs but they are by no means gutless- the Type £R£ produces 90% of its torque at 3,000 rpm."

"As a result, it turns in gear acceleration times that make the V6 (MG ZS)lookpositely peaky."

Sorry Dave!
Cheers
Mega.
Mike MEGA

So 90% aye? All very well but when it's maximum is only 145LB ft at 5,300, it's still gutless, it just has a wider power band than previous Honda engines, but still not comparable to say the latest Astra SRi Turbo which has a max of 184 LB Ft, quite a difference and the Astra hits that peak far lower than the poor old Honda........

AS yet i have only "Dusted" small fry. However, i have read posts on the Scooby BB that they have had CTR all over them.

Many Scooby owners are beginning to qustion if they should try a CTR. One chat has done so and stated that he will replace his STI import with one.

I am not trying to "sell" the CTR to everyone. But look at what the mags say ( This months What car) And what owners tell you. Don't here to many Honda guys having to go back to the dealership time and time again do we?
Anyway, when i have a couple thousand on the clock i will "Attack" somthing big, like a Boxster, or even a 911 and see how it does on a track day.

The CTR sucks! Come and have a go at my 220 any day. With over 300lb/ft of torque, you'll quickly see how much of a dog you've ended up with ;o) Rover rules!
Muhahahahaha

I would estimate 70% of posters on the Z BBS dont even own an MG ZS, ZR or ZT!!
It's all getting a bit tiresome.

Being one of the 30% I would have to agree.

At least I have an excuse. The MG Z cars aren't available here in New Zealand :o(
However, there is a rumour that a dealership will be opening up sometime in August.

In answer to the title of this thread, the "Problem with Ciciv type 'R' Honda" is simply it's ugly.

I had the mispleasure of staring at one side on from about 20 yards for about an hour on Saturday morning. It looked as ugly as fcuk! The side skirts extend ridiculously upwards at the rear (thought they were meant to extend down the way!) just to fit in the type 'r' logo. The skirts also look clumsy as if just bolted on, not like my ZR skirts which fit perfectly with the rest of the car and which are not obviously an optional accessory (on my ZR120+ at least).

The Mercedes 'A' class style bonnet of the CTR looks odd and although the view from the rear is OK, I just hated the thing.

It's performance (which it should be noted, is only achievable with a heavy right foot and not from the word go) may well be amazing and breathtaking (never driven one so only got others' comments to fall back on) but I wouldn't allow one in our village let alone take one off your hands for free!

Just my opinion anyway!

Hmmm, Lots of interesting comments here. I don't own a zed btw - Yet. But I do have regular access to one and own an F. I also owned a few Hondas including 2 Type R's. All Type R engines are bench tested fully. I can't remeber the exact figures but I think it's somewhere around the equivilant of 2500 miles or there abouts.
I also think the CTR is a great car with a fab gearbox, although I have to agree the ZR is a better looking machine IMHO....strange when you consider the ZR's family tree....

Yes i wouls agree with most of that. The CTR is not a looker, "Blakes 7 styling for sure". But it goes steers and stops well. The build is top draw, only the long heavy doors and wide pannel gaps on the bonnet spoil it for me.

re. the ZR's family tree. Despite the family resemblance, the 200/25/ZR was all Rover's own work mostly prior to BMW takeover. It did share some bits from the parts bin, but not a lot. The 400/45/ZS was Civic based, but the 200 dash got used later in the older shape 200 coupe and Tourer. Dare I say, perhaps it is the Civic pedigree that makes the ZS the car of choice for TV journos etc!

Currently one of the 70%, soon to be one of the 30% this week. However, given the base of the Z range, don't discount the input from seasoned Rover owners.
