MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - PSSSSST! Anyone want a new Red ZT for £18495.

Popped into my local MG-Rover dealership yeaterday - needed a small exhaust downtube/elbow gasket for the Montego Turbo; 41 pence! - gosh MG-R prices: daylight wossname so I bought two - save another journey sometime!

Whilst there had a close look at the gorgeous red MG ZT in their showroom. New price sticker on windscreen in very large digits: £18495, with the old previous price smaller ticket nearby: £22095. That's a very good saving and what a lot of car for well under 20k. I anticipated some good savings in the run up to Christmas, particularly after September 11th, but nothing this good so soon. The car did have a new reg plate on it - not there last week - so looks like wider margins built in for the dealers now with registered cars. This car has been the showroom centre piece for several months and although now registered, I dont think it's been out of the showroom as they have a black ZT demonstrator. I asked if there is further room for reduction if no part exchange involved to be told very little - maybe couple of hundred - WHAT A TEMPTATION, but I still fancy the ZS180 ..... Must check the piggy bank .... ;-)

At Marshalls in Cambridge they have a Red MG ZT-160 with 17 inch alloys (in my opinion better looking than the bigger 18 inch alloys).

The list price is £15995, and it's already registered.
That sounds like an absolute steal, and even though it's the lower powered version, it's still an awesome deal. I've fallen in love with that car, more so than the smaller ZS which although nice, is still a Honda Civic. Nothing wrong in that, Honda Civic's are good cars but to me the bigger MG is far more sophisticated and better built. The ZR is just too small for me and too 'boy racer', but it does look smart..

I've seen plenty on ZS 180's about, a ZR160 and a ZR120 but never a ZT. Seems this car could be potentially underated. I hope to get one very soon!

from what i've heard the 160 has an identical engine to the 190 and some dealers know how to reprogram the ecu to get 190bhp out of it, so just think 15995 + a couple of hundred quid and you have a zr190 - cheap!

You will have to tell me more Rob. Could be an interesting proposition!

Just back from some late night shopping. Opposite the Tescos in Gloucester is the main MG-R dealership so after loading the old MG boot with shopping (big boot on Montegos ), wandered over to have another look at that gorgeous red ZT190 in the showroom. The price is now £18945! I dont think I got the price wrong first time but it looks like the 4 and 9 were transposed somewhere along the way. Even so, great value and I really like the look of this car particularly with those massive alloys. In fact, the ZT has become my favourite on appearance now in front of the ZS180.

Funny how cars grow on you. When the Rover 75 first appeared about three years ago, I did not like the shape at first. This latest variation on the theme has completely changed all that for me. Really great looking car that ZT190 in red.

Jerry, in addition to the ECU differences there is aminor matter on inlet cam timing to alter for the 190bhp. However I have progress with some well known partners in finding hidden power from the V6 which should be available for both ZS and ZT V6 models in the not too distant future. The target is 10% increase on my ZS 180, it will be less on a ZT 190 as the factory has done some of the work already.

Just out of interest, what sort of power band does the KV6 engine have in its 190bhp spec.
I'm interested in comparing its torque band accross the rev range in relation to a std T16 lump (circa 197bhp).

Almost 200bhp from a n/asp engine is pretty good going and the zs180 seems to have had good accelleration reviews through the gears in comparison tests in magazines.

With the mods you previously mentioned, what possibility would there be to get up to around 250bhp from the KV6 (reliable).?
