MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Racing MG ZR

Just got the entry list for my next race at Cadwell Park this Sunday and found among the entries a MG ZR being entered in the first race. I think the race starts at one-ish so for those who want to see what this baby can do come down and have a look.

I heard that MG are releasing the ZR160 as a trim-less package for racing, price should be 13k-15k. Therefore you can add your own styling!!

Maybe this is one of them!

I'd like to see that, pity I'll be at Donnington watching the ZS's instead.

What series is that racing in?
David Harasym

It's racing in the Anglia Phoenix Championship, I think it is just a run down to see how the car performs.. though I did hear a rumour of MGR thinking of making these cars into a one make affordable race series, unlike if you want to buy the MG ZS touring car which will cost you between 70k and 100k.

MG Rover are indeed looking at running the ZR as a clubmans race series for next year. The specification is yet to be decided but will remain standard where possible to keep costs down and allow the cars to be built up from a kit of parts from MG Sport and Racing. Fully built cars will also be available.

The one that was there at the weekend was a bit of a parts bin special intended to be a focal point for generating interest. Apparently it was a bodyshell and a pile of bits the weekend before and was only finished on the Friday evening.

Keep your eyes peeled for further information coming from MG Rover or the Car Club.

It would be nice to see a one make series like the Cliocup to be formed, it could then replace the Clios at future touring car races?

I personnally don't want to see a Clio Cup replacement because it will be too expensive for anyone except commercial teams. The F Cup was a professional series at its inception - the winner was from the team who could afford to test several days a week and replace the bumpers between practice and the race.

With the current MG commitment to touring cars I suspect and hope the factory will want to promote a cheap clubmans series, prossibly targeted at beginners, without prize money or other incentives.

I agree with what you say, lets have some Zs in club racing, but a one make championship would be good for MG also?

To this day there are still vey few Fs racing in the club scene, what can be done to ensure that ZRs come to the track in greater numbers?

Kelvin, IMO the main problem with racing Fs is that they are expensive to buy & repair :(

If I could afford to, I would - I know a £10K car would be a better prospect than a £17K car to throw around a circuit.

But I think a little prize money would be needed, if for nothing else than repairs during the season! ;)

If only I had a spare £10K or so ;)

I personally know of MGFs put on the circuit for under 4k, that includes purchase of accident damaged car, its repair and fitting of saftey equipmet!!

Kelvin, fair point, didn't think about doing it that way. hmmm :)

I think we're getting a bit off the original topic and starting to have a more general 'cost of motorsport' discussion! This year the race entry fees alone come to £2K for a 12 race series.

I know there are a couple ( at most AFAIK ) of repaired F's racing and that the factory released a number of production prototypes some of which are raced - SVC registration numbers. But, in the five years since the F appeared competitor numbers have dropped. If MG are really keen to promote clubmans level racing then a car or kit of components made available at cost could have significant benificial effect. They would have to have a specification based on standard components to keep costs in check.

I am sure that the Car Club is involved since they would very likely run a clubmans level race series.

Also, do MG want to run another proffessional level series alongside the touring cars effort and the rallying program, remember they are still supporting the F cup cars as well.

Keep watching the news - if the race series starts in 2002 MG will need time to build the cars!

I think that the Autosports International show at the NEC in January may hold some interesting options that will become available from about Feb.
