MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Roadfund renewal

Is this correct?
£400 for 12 months road tax on my ZS 2.5
Malcolm

Yes, brilliant, isn't it? In fact £400+. This penal road tax surcharge starts on cars as small as a 2001 1.7 Astra! How many people are going to be able to afford a modern low CO car now their existing one has been devalued by about 60% (according to at least one motoring organisation and car price guide)? They will either have to stick with it and live with the cost, or take the hit and buy a pre-2001 car with even higher CO! Green, it ain't. You may be able to delay the hit by taxing for six months and then 12 months, if the latter occurs before April.
Paul Hunt

Great isn't it. In order to save the ozone the world will end up with a massive increase in dumped cars and scrap heaps. A bit like the fiasco caused by ROhS (restriction of hazardous substances). Not only were tons of electrical products soldered with now-illegal lead solder chucked away, but in order to solder with silver solder you need to heat up the solder by a further 10 degrees, so using more electricity and greater carbon emissions. DOH... Where to all these idiots come from...

But, will the Conservatives remove the additional levels on road tax if they get into power?
JANINE ELLIOT

Something on the news yesterday about the Chancellor 'considering' protests about fuel prices and these retrospective penal tax rates.

But even if there is a rethink I doubt it will extend to our cars, and if I were being *really* pessimistic they could be pushed even higher to offset the losses from reducing the increases on lower CO cars.
Paul Hunt

my zt has zero co2 emissions at mot but will cost me £450 !!!
p

Zero *CO* emissions, not zero CO2 emissions, that is the difference. And I should have used 'CO2' in my earlier posts and not 'CO'.

Does the high Tax rate apply if the vehicle is registered before the 23/03/2006?

Having looked here (and looking to buy a 2003 ZS180) I think it doesn't...

That web page is quite clear that any car registered after 1st March 2001 is subject to road tax based on CO emissions. *For one year only* from 13th March 2008 the ZS remains at £210, after that it goes up to £400+ (which the page doesn't detail).

I've just received the V11 for my ZS and it states I can only renew five days before expiry, and that the disc can take up to five days to arrive which is cutting it a bit fine. It's always been 15 days before, the limit of five days applies if you are retaxing the car after a break, which mine isn't. Anyone else had this? I tried to ring the DVLA but out of four numbers and umpteen options couldn't find a human bean to speak to to asky why this is, so am awaiting a reply to an email.
Paul Hunt

Correction, we now have an *extra* ten days in the month before renewal is due. A rare example of an improvement of service to the customer, which is why I read it to be the other way.
