MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Rover 75 - BMW 520i

Dear friends. This is my first posting to this forum.
Yesterday on german television there was a test ( comparison ) between the new BMW 520i and the Rover 75. Guess what? In most comparisons the Rover did beat the BMW and it is cheaper, too.
That's what people have to know and stop buying expensive BMW's but consider this incredibly good Rover/MG 75!

Rover/MG needs better sale results, so could you send emails to your car magazines, they should make a test ( comparison ) between BMW and Rover and then publish it!

best regards

P.s: Currently I have several british cars one of them is a Rover 75 Tourer, before I had a Rover 75 saloon. Great cars!

Zoran,

I had been advocating such comparisons for a long time but on the previous BMW 520-if the 75 is indeed better than the new one, that's quite an achievement!

However I suppose many Germans feel more secure with a brand they know,or are there 'buy local' policies for firms like we used to have in the UK?

PS I suppose there is also the question of depreciation & resale value.

Hello Zoran,

can you tell me which program showed this comprison you were talking about.

Hopefully they will show it once again.

Some more good news. The Alliance and Leicester does an annual report on car depreciation.

The 75 is rated as the best Compact Executive car to buy nearly new and the best to hang onto for 3 years because of the low depreciation in this year's report (Jan 04)

It also calls it a Compact Exec rather that a “family” car. I just hate the thought that ANYONE would thing the 75 is the equivalent of a Cortina or Cavalier or the VW repmobile (cannot remember the names for the Ford and Vauxhalls – but I am sure you all know what I mean).

Here is the Website http://www.alliance-leicester.co.uk/smartermotoring/carpriceindex/depreciation.pdf

Cheers and good night

Bought oour 75 at 2 years, and will probably seek to replace this year at 5 years - probably fractionally too long a time to keep it, but the sums seem to still work pretty favourably Patrick. Will be looking to trade for a 1 or 2 year old ZTT (probably a CDTi - I might have to get it chipped though! LOL) - but final decision will be dependent upon whether there are some good deals on the Mk1 cars now that the Mk2 is hoving into view...

It was on B3 I think. Emission called Rasthaus I think, It is a pitty that tests like that do not get published in major magazines, so Email your favorite magazine to urge them to make such a comparison.

Zoran, it's the 3 Series taking a beating at the wheels of the ZT, rather than the 5, but have you checked out

No, no it is not this comparison which was sponsored by MG Rover.
It was an independent German test showed on German TV.
I think you british are so much the masters of understatement, that you even do not think that the Rover 75 beats the all new BMW 520i! But in this independent test it truly did, and it is even cheaper!
The MG/Rover 75 is truly a world class car it is a pity that it seems that nobody even Rover/MG enthusiasts are trying to believe that.
I had a new Rover 75 saloon and then switched it for a new Rover 75 tourer. With those V6 cars I have done 40000 absolutely trouble free kilometers. I have driven many other cars in those last two years, including BMW's, and even Jaguar XJ. But the 75 is such an incredibly fine car and for a modern car my favourite.
