MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Things to look for when buying ZT?

Hi all,
I just wandered over from the MGF boards, cos a friend is looking at ZTs to buy, and he asked if there are any traits to be aware of. So, any thoughts?
I wish I'd done the same thing for my F, then I'd have been more aware of HGF! Is the ZT susceptible?

Logically the K series V6 is susceptable to HGF but like the F the newer the car the less the likelihood, as MGR develop through the issue. Generally though they are quite robust: as robust as other makes.

I would think that you just have to keep your eyes on it! which is easy enough.

I got over this prob by getting the V8 which is simply an utterly fantastic car. I cannot tell you how bloody brilliant it is!

The V6 is merely superb in comparison!

Have owned a 75 KV6 and now have a ZTT 135 CDTi - and I have to say that the whole family of cars are simply fantastic. I've had no ground for any quibbles over either of them :o)

The KV6 is pretty bullet proof. There was an initial problem where owners were driving their cars without oil (initial oil consumption could be quite high), but other than that, there doesn't seem to be many problems - although the variable intake length slider valve can stick which can limit performance somewhat.

Curiously, it is the BMW-sourced diesel that seems to attract the most negative comment (if you read through the archives) - but no problem with mine!

Can't think of any particular Achilles heel - but perhaps someone else can comment?

The V6 190 had a small problem in the arly 01/02 cars with bearing trounble which was a batch issue I believe, but careful adherence to running in should see minimal oil consumption. The car doesn't feel loose until about 10k miles, it really takes a while to properly loosen up and perform. Great growl from the V6, an dthe only problem on my 160 V6 is as Rob mentions in that the slider was replaced under warranty. Some claim the plenum chamber is not up to the job, but it depends how you view, no complaints from my side and running Mobil1 0W40 and Shell Optimax, I reckon the 160 is a good choice. The 160 1.8T is a better choice logically than the V6 for a slight improvement in performance and a big gain in economy, but I would prefer the smoother unstressed 2.5V6 to the harsher 1.8 4 cylinder with Turbo. The 190 has bigger brakes than the rest (exc. V8 of course) but otherwise, the ZT and 75 are doing very well on the reliability tables.
Having had both 75 and ZT, the two badges are chalk and cheese!

Dont forget MG ZT is at no 13 in the JD Power survey
which is pretty damn good!!

Thanks gentlemen on Ken's behalf for your considered responses. Much appreciated!
