MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Tyres...

OK, I've completed 25k miles since I bought my ZS180 in October. I now need to get some new tyres for the front (the rears have plenty of life left). What are the choices?

1. replace with the same tyres (205 45 17 Michelin Pilot)
2. replace with same size but different make.
3. replace with wider tyres (225 40 17)

Is it wise to uprate the front tyres on the ZS with bog standards on th rear? I know that with the F the general consensus is that the rears should be uprated first.

Any suggestions for alternative makes, if option 2 or 3 recommended?

25K is brilliant, I got 18k out of my P-zeros, 10-12k is what some peole are getting!! If your happy with the level of grip then stay with what you have.

Is cost an issue? I found front replacements at £110.

A colleague at work needed new fronts after about 12k - I keep a close eye on mine, visible wear now after 6k.

Most of my mileage has been on the motorway. The only chance I get to wear my tyres out is on slip roads and the Dartford crossing toll booths ;)

17k out of the Michelins on the front (including a couple of track days). Still legal, but not by much. Intend getting new Michelins fitted before summer holidays.

for my ZR, I would like loads of grip on the front, for hill climbing and general handling. The front wheels do most of the work, so something a bit extra special seems worth it.

I am thinking of the Dunlop tyres used on the MG TF, where the handling is noted for grip, and also, Dunlop is mentioned on the news postings about the ZS racing cars

though, my local tyre dealer recommends the directional Avon tyres they have in stock. These might be the ZZ3 in this link -

Pity you can't spell, it does detract from the credibility of your arguement.

checking out a mysterious non-leak on a back tyre, I was advised after 21,400 miles it was time to change the front tyres. I bought Avon ZZ3 because that is what my local tyre depot had, and they are much better than the existing Michelin in the grip department where it counts. Though whether I've been extreme in my choice of tyres, not sure. £187.00 for two. The back tyres have more wear to go yet, but for them I think I would choose a fuel saving tyre, and stick to the same brand if one exists.
