MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Vibration from the Back-end

This was a noise and a half...

yesterday my ZS 120 had not been used all day, and last night i drove 2-3 miles to pick up a friend. the car was not running for about 15 minutes before setting off again. when i started the engine the back end started knocking very loudly. the noise seemed to be eminating from the read end of the exhaust. when i say loud it was loud and was going at about 5 knocks a second! i looked under the car but could see nothing - and did not even attempt to see if could hold the exhaust steady.

i will be calling the garage today - but has anyone experienced anything similar?

my ZS is a 2001 plate with about 15k on the clock.

thanks
Demon

'Loose' nuts and bolts left over from production in the spare wheel well?

Loose baffles in exhaust tailpipe?
Eric

>> but has anyone experienced anything similar?<<

Not on my ZS120 but have had something similiar on other cars years ago.

Broken exhaust mounting? Maybe it could be the exhaust has been pulled or slipped off one of its mountings and the movement or vibration is banging it against the underneath of the body somewhere.

Let us know when its sorted and what it was.....

Hi John
Sorry to butt in but my mate from Halewood has been to see me. Seems that your must loved Ford motor company is in deep sh*t!

Landrovers with loads of faults, Jag not selling as planed, strikes at Aston. Than in the US loads of trouble with them having to recall their SUVs (Again) and Crown Vics....needing loads of cash spent on each one!

Sh*tting themselves over the RS Focus still, Their image from the hay day of the XRs RS and Cosworth days a fast faiding memory!

They don't produce cars here any more (expect Aston/Jag/Landrover).....Let them DIE is say!

Any thoughts?
Cheers

Sell them to John Towers for a tenner. LOL

Then when it all goes pearshaped, Tony Blair can nationalise it all and then with a few more quality problems, strikes etc, it would be just like the 70's again!
Martin

Martin,

I remember the 70s fondly .... and the new BMC and BL cars I bought back then gave long service and no problems ..... and they got lots of HARD usage.

Never ceases to amaze me how some people remember the 1970s ... like the BBC TV Newsreader who on screen mentioned the "Three day week" being during the period we had a Labour Goverment at that time.

Mega,

FOMOCO will not die .... there will have to be severe pruning within the whole of all Global car production as currently, over supply means most, repeat, most manufacturers have problems as a result. Fords will already have plans in place for pruning production. Too big can be too much and makes problems less easy to identify and rectify quickly. Despite BMWs worst efforts, MG-R have done reasonably well all things considered.

Provided more of my fellow Brits can clear their "Brits are crap" mindset and actually try a new Zed or even a Rover, then they may just be pleasently surprised with what these, and here I use a MEGAism .... "warned over" Rovers have to offer...... lol.....

John

P.S. Having clocked up well over 1000 miles in my new ZS 120+, I can honestly say it's one of the finest, maybe finest - reserve judgement - handling "ordinary" production cars I've ever driven. Only ownership downside with this ZS so far ... some *anker modified my rear spoiler by extinguishing a hot cigarette butt out on it resulting in a small area of GRP melt ..... some people eh.

He was probaly beaten Sh*tless by an MG and want some pay back. I heard of a guy in Southport who kept getting his Scooby damaged. He set up a detector on his path way and late one night it tripped.

His German Shepard "Caught" said gentilman who comfessed all to local Plod, seems he blew his motor trying to catch the Scooby!

All was said Tongue very definitely in Cheek! Having said that, talking to a few mechanics from that time, one would think all BL cars failed to leave the showroom, but surely this period was no worse than current situation where listening to some individuals one would think all new MG R's will fail. Like you I have had some exemplary service from Rovers and current MG (30kmiles/14mths).

Anyway, has Demon sorted the vibration out yet?

demon my mg zs 120 did the same my local dealer fitted a new back box hasent happend since. jason

Well, i took her in to Rover and they lifted her up and checked the underneath. i was waiting near the garage entrance so could see everything. i even went in and had a look myself. after about 10-15 minutes of inspection and some nut tightening they found nothing wrong - which is what i expected. they also started her up to try and invoke the noise but nothing happened. so now rover have offered to keep her in for a day to give her a good going over, so i have booked her in for monday. i may take the car in and get that checked over too - only kidding.

well hopefully they will find what is wrong and fix it monday. even if it is a new back box. the trouble is that the noise is very intermittent only lasts for a few minutes.

they are also going to replace the front and rear badges as the lacquer is lifting off them (all under warranty).

i will keep you all "posted" on how it goes.

Demon.

Got the ZS back from Rover after them having it for a whole day. The knocking ended up being something knocking against the exhaust when it got to a certain heat. also got the front badge replaced, and the rear one has not arrived yet, so they will call me when it comes in and wll replace it while i wait. i also had a spot of what i thought was rust on the drivers door. it turned out not to be rust, but a simple stain, which they polished out.

i had a brand new 5 door 45 for the day, only a 1.4 so it was a totally different car!

they were extremely nice to deal with and feel confident that they will do all they can to help me in the future.

Thanks to Marshalls Rovers in Cambridge

PS. if you get the chance, pop into see them. the receptionist is very very very cute. i may have to try and find something else wrong with the car ;op

:o)
