MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - ZS Tyre Wear

How R yours wearing!!
9k miles, and like someone else have noticed greater wear on the inside of the tyres (P Zeros) On visual inspection also it look likes the wear is less on the nearside. Still a few miles left in them yet though!!

Our ZS180 had it's 15k service on Wednesday, when collecting the car we were told that the front tyres were 'knackered'. The outsides are fine but the insides are very smooth. I would call this very uneven wear, should MGR correct this problem and contribute a little to the cost of the new tyres? I reckon that 3/4 of the tyres have another 5k in them. Am I being unreasonable to expect the tyres on a new car to wear evenly.

Hi Nik
Hi Anita

I hope all is well with you both. 15,000 miles is in my good good mileage for a powerful FWD. If its any help, i "Killed" a front pair of Firestones on the RS 1800 in 3,000 miles.
Not by wheelspin, just very hard connering!
Great FUN!

I agree with MEGA's comments - if you have been driving the car hard the tyre shoulders do wear first. For trackdays - pressure are normally increased by upto 3psi. If you are worried get the cat 4-wheel aligned - there is an excellent technician (DAVE) at Steve Hill Motorsports, nr Aylesbury that can sort u out if you are local.

BTW - I've just replaced all 4 after 8,000 miles on an EVO VII (from Micheldever Tyres). To be replaced this week by a ZED TEE 190.

Watch your oil after about 500 miles it tends to go quickly. Brians ZT has done 3,000 also and its not using as much.

Thanks guys,
Fully accept that 15k is a decent mileage from the front tyres, but it would be 20k for 80% of the tyre. I guess that I'm just getting pee'd of with the general attitude of the dealer at the moment(oil consumption wise). I will post about that when the time is right.
Nik & Anita

Hi Nik+Anita

I was wondering, did you ever trace that knocking noise from the front suspension? I don't think anybody has had the same trouble.
Regards.

OIL consumption - why is this a problem on the ZEDS? I had a R75 2.5 and it never used any oil!
Jerry Flint

It appears that some K series, especially VVC and KV6 can see a greater thirst for oil in the first few thousand miles, so regular checking is in order, preferably in the morning before starting so you get the most accurate measure.

This is not a specifically unusual situation as for example the new Honda VTEC engines have a similar early life thirst.

Mega,
Yes, apparantly two bolts on the suspension were loose,"Good job you pointed that out, it could have been nasty!" Are we getting quality service or what?
Despite the niggleing problems, and if the oil consumption finally beats MGR, we will buy another ZS180, no other car we've tried comes close. That is obviously 15k cars.
Just about to set off to Liverpool again, maybe next time you would like to meet and test the ZS on some of your favourite roads. I bet you would then be tempted.
Nik & Anita

The simple answer is YES!
But Liverpool is now filling with new MINIS! I was proud of the fact that Liverpool was almost MINI free, but over the last 4 weeks or so they everywhere!

There may be a case for the Cooper-S, the 200BHP "Works" or the Cooper-M (Bmw M Sport), but not the bog standed one!

I think you will find that there is a significant amount of camber in the ZS suspension geometry. This is why it grips and handles so well. The downside is that you get this type of tyre wear. Mine are wearing in exactly the same way - and I've heard a lot of other people saying that same thing - and estimate that the insides will be down to the TWI by 8,500-9,000 miles, while the outsides will still have 1-1.5mm above that. I guess it's just the price you pay for the handling.

Hi all

I have just had my tyres on the ZS180 checked at 13500 and was told there is very even 4mm left across both front tyres.
