MG MGA - ? cleaning and caring for leather top
I've looked through all my manuals but cannot find anything regarding the care and cleaning of a leather convertible top. The top is the original so I am assuming it's leather. Also what products do you use for the perspex(?) rear window and the windows in the side curtains? I have both the early and later side curtains that came with a 57 MG. It appears they are made of the same material. Thanks so much! Jackie |

Hi Jacqueline It's not leather, but vinyl, unless it's an aftermarket top that looks like cloth. To clean it, just use a specialist top cleaner for a modern car. if the grime is stubborn use a soft nailbrush. For the rear window there are some products that claim to remove any fogging, but I've never used them For getting rid of small scuffs in an otherwise clear rear window and perpsex sliders on the sidescreens, use the special fluid for motorbike helmet visors - works a treat. |

Thanks for the input. My husband is pretty sure it's leather, so it must be aftermarket. I'm hoping for some brand names from other folks in the US so I can go in and ask for a specific product and not be the twit female that doesn't know what it is she wants. Just a pet peeve of mine. Jackie |

Jacqueline, A leather top would be a startlingly rare thing, I mean really really rare. Like as in one of a kind custom. I'd bet quite a few dollars that its a nice vinyl top. |

Well then, in the unlikely case that it is actually leather, go for Connelly Hide Food. Available via Moss and other places. In the very likely possability that it is vinyl, I suggest the Griot's Garage mail order line--the specific product is called Vinyl & Rubber Dressing. |

Leather would not be used as a top by any knowledgeable person. Leather is poorly suited for this purpose. Leather is not waterproof, shrinks when wet and then hardens when dry. Your top is not likely leather. Most vinyl tops are made with a "leather" finish embossed into the surface. There are many products made to clean aircraft windows. They are also made of plastic. Google "aircraft windshield cleaner" Meguiers makes a line of products suitable to your purposes. www.meguiars.com |
