Once the millionaires tire of their toys, there will be a huge crash and us mere mortals can come and sniff out a few bargains.

I was surprised to recently notice that the asking price for a decent OHV MGA Roadster in the UK is of the order of £25K, with dealer cars often at £35K. Have they gone up in recent times?
Here in Australia the prices would be not much more than half the prices I recently observed in Britain.

With interest rates (UK) still on the floor it’s not surprising that investments are being made into ‘historically unique’ and ‘race’ proven cars.

The top end of the UK classic car market has seen prices rise steadily for 5/7 years and now are at truely silly levels not seen since the 80’s boom (and crash).

This has now spread down to 'fresh' and 90’s restorations along with original barn finds.

Honest daily drivers are still available at an honest price but becoming scarce with all prices now on the move.

Interest in the MGA has only really been seen over the last 18 months or so. But there is still a huge variance in price as the market growth widens.

That is except for Twin Cams which are now astronomical £'s. More than doubling in price, despite only being a few extra thousand 5 or so years ago.

It’s as if the noraml MGA is not yet seen as an investment car, rather an enthusiasts car.

An MGA 1600 Mk2 recently sold at a Shannon's auction for $49,000, that's the highest I've heard of here in Oz.

"An MGA 1600 Mk2 recently sold at a Shannon's auction for $49,000, that's the highest I've heard of here in Oz."

Actually I went to that Shannon's auction, to look at an E Type and a Norton Commando, both of which interested me.
I had a look at the MGA. It was indeed quite a nice straight bodied car. Good (but not brilliant) paint. But:
1) Australian build car, with (nice) interior trim, and Maker's Plate as per an Abingdon build car.
2) Missing carburettor overflow pipes. (fire hazard)
3) Missing carburettor cool air duct
4 )Missing blanking for heater inlet at the front (no heater)
5) Missing radiator air dam under bonnet
6) Over-riders, front and rear fitted upside down.
7) Demisters fitted back to front
8) Sill cover strips unpainted
etc etc.
None of these problems of course are major, and all readily correctable, but with that attention to detail I had to question what else lurked under the paint.

Nearly all the prices on the night were remarkably high. Maybe with low interest rates, our local real estate bubble of the last few years now peaking, and Australian shares probably not doing too much for the next couple of years, people are looking to park their money in classic cars?
Oh, and both the Norton and the Jag went for more than I was comfortable paying, though both were lovely.

T Aczel, you comment "6) Over-riders, front and rear fitted upside down." This reminds me of the time I was one of the concours judges at an MG meeting. It was my partner that noted that most of the A's had their over riders upside down. The observation of a woman!! None of us 'males' noticed it.
