MG MGA - A little help from our Canadian friends

My Sister and Brother in Law are taking an expat assignment in Toronto (requires a relocation from Chicago)

My BIL wants to take his 2003 Mercedes SLK with him and has been told he can't by the moving company....no reason given.

That sounds like a load of crap. I know several of you all have imported your cars into Cananda....and those are old fashioned cars for pity sakes.

Anybody able to point us in the right direction in wading through these regulations?

Thanks Vry much.

Tysen,

Transport Canada maintains a registry of which vehicles can or can not be imported from the USA to Canada. Vehicles may be classified as "inadmissable" for all kinds of reasons, but often because they do not comply with certain Canadian safety standards. See http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importation/VAFUS/list/MERCEDES_BENZ____see_notes_.htm for current info on late model Mecedes vehicles.

It looks as though your BILs car would require some modification(s) by an authorized Canadian Mercedes dealer before it could be licensed in Canada. You'll have to contact Mecedes-Benz Canada to find out exactly what modifications are required. Hope this helps.

Andy,

Thanks VERY much. It appears that his car is inadmissable.

I'm going to guess that there is some type of waiver for antique cars

Tysen,

Yes there are different rules for older cars, but seeing how the "Benz" is only 5 years old, it will not qualify. I don't have the link right now, but the Canada Customs website used to have some info on what cars, what years etc were allowed. This may be the same info that Andy gave you above.......

Vehicles over 15 years old are exempt. However, the 15 year limit is apparently under review.
