MG MGA - Anyone identify this radio?

Hello, does anyone know what this is? Haven't found any info on it yet....

Mark J Michalak

Mark,
That is the same radio that is in one of my cars. I will check on what I can get off of it.

Thanks Mike. This is in the "new" Magnette I just acquired out of a barn in Kentucky. It's fairly original and still has the factory warranty. Unfortunately, it has expired. I was wondering if this was dealer option or aftermarket. The car wasn't purchased at a dealer but was imported directly from England by the original owner. At least one other person has this radio in his Magnette. Is yours in an MGA?

Looks like the Motorola from my 1500, except mine was mounted in the standard radio location, using a modified blanking plate. Back of the radio says it is a Motorola 600X. It was still working 10-15 years ago. There is a switch on the back that allows you to select positive or negative ground.

Mark,
The radio is in a 1500 MGA, I couldn't tell you whether it was "original" or not, but Motorola is American. It may have been installed by the dealer over here.

Motorola made car radios in the UK (in Stotfold) for years, so even though the company is American, the radio could well have been made in the UK (or many other places for that matter).

Mark,

I have the same radio on my 1958 MGA. The knobs on mine are in better shape. If you would like a picture of what they look like let me know.

If it is a USA AM radio, then it will have the Civil Defense triangles on the tuning knob/indicator. I don't think that radios elsewhere in the world had the CD logos on them. I may be mistaken.

Looks like a Marilyn Monroe or Jane Russell model to me.

My radio looks startlingly similar to Mark's, down to the broken/destroyed knobs. I couldn't tell whether there were Civil Defense information on it, or anything else. Ron, could you post a picture. Mark, I didn't get any more info yet than what you have, but I will see whether there is anything on it tomorros.

Thanks Mike. Del, a search for "Motorola 600X" doesn't turn up anything except an obscure reference to a wiring diagram. There was some talk on the Magnette list of resin casting new knobs. That's probably the only circumstance in which I'd bother to restore it. Not much to it except for the knobs. Shame too, because it seems like a rare find.
