MG MGA - archive photos

The university archive in Zürich has just put 380,000 photos of Zurich online and made a big announcement. Out of curiosity I searched for a picture of the street I live in, (I have lived on the street for almost 25 years) and found the attached image. Wanting to figure out the age of the photo, I zoomed in to look at the cars, and amazingly, tucked 3 up from the bottom corner is one that dates the photo to between 1955 and 1962! I was amazed...

The street still has many of the same houses, but much has changed. See google maps in the next post

and in 2015 the trees are much more prominent, and there is now a big industrial area (hidden down an embankment) and the old industrial area at the bottom of the old photos is now being redeveloped as housing for university hospital staff.

Dominic, fascinating photo, although to say it dates from between 1955 and 1962, you would presumably need to know that the MGA was still in production when the photo was taken. In fact, the image information dates it as 1964.

Behind the flats which are just across the road from the MGA, there would appear to be an Austin/Morris 1100 (ADO16) which was first produced in 1962.

Health & safety would have a field day with this...

Always love to see how changes occur over the decades; photographs are the perfect way to retain history. Here in the U.S., the University of Connecticut has a site which allows one to see aerial photographs of Connecticut and do a comparison between 1934, 1990, and 2004. While the 1934 photos are not of the best quality, you do get a good sense of change & growth in the State. They also have plans to layer in photos from other dates as well.

When I showed this to one of my (ancient) neighbours she told me the big barn / sawmill top left was torn down just before her son was born, and he was born in January 1963.

Interesting to see all these photos. I just spent the last couple months developing a corridor improvement plan for medians of one of the entry roadways to the city of Boise. I used much historical data and archive photos as the plan included artwork that needed to be historically relevant to the area. Attached is one of the area photos. The improvement plan was for Vista Ave. in the photo.
