MG MGA - Boot security

In the latest copy of Enjoying MG from the MGOC, there was a question from a reader about fitting a lock to the boot to improve security. I personally think it's unnecessary, as I doubt that many thieves would know how to open the boot from inside - however, when I bought my car, I found it had a metal eye bolted through the rear of the boot into the cabin next to the boot release catch. They can then be padlocked together to prevent the boot being opened. I've never bothered, but I thought I would share this little gem!

Steve Gyles has a lock. See http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/lockable_boot.htm

Another trick is to make up another (or modify the existing one) pull rod.

You cut off the end and thread it to take a handle that screws on when in use. You unscrew the handle and take it with you such that only the threaded end protrudes from the bulk head. Not easy to see or pull without the handle.

If you want to disguise the rod end further just fit a "lift the dot" stud to the end of it so that to the casual observer it looks like a normal attachment point for a curtain bag or such like.

Neat idea about the handle Steve, although I guess you could just pull the threaded portion with a pair of pliers. Mind you that would be handy for me as I would probably lose the handle (or leave it in the boot/trunk!)

The "casual observer" would have had to tip the seat forward and move the side curtain bag out of the way...

This thread reminds me of a hotel we stayed in that had a safe in the wardrobe that wasn't fitted properly, so it could be picked up and taken away! There was little point in locking it. So the first thing to do must be to ensure the car is immobilised properly, or the crook can take the car, and later force the boot open.
In my car, I find it so difficult to get my hand on the lever through the folds of roof, I doubt someone, from outside the MGA family, will find it too easy! But then there is never anything of value in my boot.

I must be honest and admit that I have never used my bootlock that Shane provided the link to above. I have rarely carried anything of value that will actually fit inside.
