MG MGA - Broken Hood hinge

Hi all,

Last night in the FINAL assembly of my car I was setting the hood when suddenly one of the hood hinges broke.
The part that broke was only the plate that is screwed on the body, not the the one on the hood-side.

I was looking at the usual suppliers MOSS, VB and LBCCo and the only seem to see the full assembly as a kit and is quite expensive, like $60.

Do any of you know where I can get only that particular part?
Or if any of you has one lying around I would be interested in buying it from you.

Thank you in advance,
Gonzalo

Gonzalo,
Which side hinge do you need? I will check my barn parts tonight and see if I have an extra. Have a good day!

Gonzalo,
From what you describe I suspect it could be fixed (welded). There must be someone in you area who could do it. Post a picture if you can.

Good luck.
Gerry
Oh, and I believe you are referring to the "bonnet" hinge..:)

Yes I am referring to the bonnet hinge.
It is the LH that would need. I don't think they are sided though...

Indeed I guess I could get it welded... but I preferred to get a new/used one.

Thanks!

They are sided, and difficult (for me at least) to tell right from left. The boot hinges are the same as the bonnet hinges. Don't mix them up!

Yes they are handed. You can spot it if you know what to look for, and easier if you have both left and right hinges in your hands hand at the sane time. The flat plates are angled relative to the hinge pins. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd119.htm

I am going to get the bodyshop guy to weld it for me. It seems like the easiest solution.
I believe the bonnet hinge plates are flat and not angled.

I will let you know if I need anything.

Thanks for the advice.

I can see that it is going to be a problem for me to ever differentiate between the left and right bonnet hinges Barney because (as all my MGA friends will probably agree) its very unlikely that I will ever experience the "sane time" that you mentioned!

Fortunately my weakened mental state still lets me enjoy owning and driving my MGA.

For welding the plates, lay the hinge inverted on a flat surface. The plates should lie in a common plane, squared up and parallel at the near edges, while the arm will be canted slightly to one side with the canted hinge pin.

I am sometimes sane, and I do know how to spell, but I have dyslexic fingers that often rearrange the keyboard, so I am seldom the same.
