MG MGA - Brooklands MGA Event 2015

Colin Manley and I were at the Brooklands MG day last Sunday. And there may have been others of you there who read this forum.

The glorious weather brought the cars out in their hundreds. They had to be spread throughout the museum complex and there were even many cars parked on the famous banking. The MGA was given the central area in front of the club buildings to mark its 60th anniversary. Colin did a count of at least 70 MGAs which is probably as many as the MGCC gets annually at its main Silverstone event.

My own personal thanks to Colin and others from the MGCC who gave up their time and worked so hard to make it a most enjoyable event.

Thank you Steve. Certainly the weather helped and both my girls enjoyed the day (even though we had been may times before) with my Daughter taking a great interest in the old parked up British designed & built aircraft - many of them designed and built at Brooklands itself. I have to say that the Bus Museum was an added feature and, god forbid, i recall working on some of the types of vehicle way back in my first Apprenticeship year!

We had a couple of issues with Brooklands, but it did not spoil the enjoyment on the day.

Yes, well done Colin and MGCC colleagues. A great day out. As I arrived at the museum to be instructed as to where to park, a Marshall shouted "great, just needing a last blue MGA to complete the ring of MGA's around the central Octagon theme in front of the museum". So that's where KJX 157 was parked for the day! As a Twin Cam owner, I was pleasantly surprised to see just how many there were at Brooklands, and so many in fabulous condition. There seem to be an ever increasing number of Twin Cams in circulation nowadays - is this a trend due to more enthusiastic restorers around? Met Colin Manley and Neil Burnside but sadly missed you Steve.

Hi Bruce

I actually spent quite some time beside your car chatting to Colin. For those that don't know, that is Colin's white twin cam alongside in your photo. I was parked just outside the 'inner wire' of the club buildings about 20M from the MGCC stand and immediately behind the red louvre bonnet Judson supercharged car.

Don't know if you watched Neil Burnside go up the test hill in one of his twin cams that he had brought along? Like a rocket! Must have got fastest time of the day!

Unfortunately I had to leave before the fun started because of other family commitments.

Missed you again Steve! By a shear fluke the marshals parked me backed up to the club house. Now that will never happen again..! I had a good count up and I got to 80 MGAs in the sun - what a sight. Pic of me, ESKie and our Solent banner.

Hi Steve and others,

Loved the photos of the MGAs at Brooklands. Must have been a great day!

On a related topic, did anyone see the Sultan of Oman's Vickers VC10 parked on the tarmac?

HM Sultan Qaboos donated his VC10 to the Brooklands Museum after the aircraft's retirement in 1987. This was the only one of 54 VC10s to return to its home at Brooklands, 25 years after the first VC10 took off from here.

On 6 July 1987 Richard King and David Parsons, Deputy Commander of Oman Royal Flight, landed at Brooklands for the last time.

Looks like I missed a fantastic day but desperately trying to finish my A this year, so every spare minute spent in the garage at the moment (hence no recent posts).

This is because this is a double anniversary for me - the 60th and the 25th year of my ownership of my A.

Went to Brooklands earlier in the year to take my Dad on the Concorde experience, which he enjoyed immensely.

I was hoping to get around the car museum as well but once he got talking to the volunteers on the aircraft side, who were mostly ex Vickers people, my hopes of seeing the cars were over. That's what happens when your Dad is ex De Havilland employee!

Yes Doug, we did visit the Sultans VC10 (and spent a long time chatting in there too) - what a great aircraft.

Chris.
