MG MGA - Car capsule

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with the inflatable "Car Capsule" that Moss sells, or the more expensive "Carcoon?" The claim is that these inflatable indoor shelters will prevent rust, mildew, and rodent damage to a car stored for prolonged periods in a less than ideally dry and clean garage. Do they work as advertised? Thanks.

A lower cost option is Permabag, with which I have had good service. It needs less space, no power and has a humidity meter.

A few moth balls in the foot-wells will keep the rodents out.

Garage not coming along as fast as planned?
Del Rawlins

Thanks for the input, everyone. The garage is coming along, Del. But having just trailered my "A" up from Oregon last year, I'm looking at buying another car to keep there for my west coast travels.

I just purchased the outdoor version which is made from a heavier silver material. I had researched them for a few weeks with the intention of buying one before the rainy season starts (US Pacific NW). The reports I read were all ok. Prices for the Outdoor are considerably higher though $649 (Californiacarcovers) to about $1100 I think (Costco) for the 20 foot version. I found one locally on Craigslist that the owner had used to store his classic car while waiting for permanent garaging. He was very happy with it and demonstrated it for me. We folded it out and inflated it quite quickly. It has 3 computer fans to inflate it. The price was $300 was less then I had budgetted so I picked it up. Will use over the winter and find out firsthand how effective they are. My MGA will stay in my regular garage though.

Hi

Not normally on the ’A’ board – but look up often to touch base on the next anticipated project. I currently have a ‘C’.

I use a Carcoon, it works well – its an indoor one with 2 fans to keep it inflated. If the car is being stored for longish periods its ideal, indeed it often looks to come out less dusty than when it went in!.

The only word of warning is that the size for the C is huge… about 3 ft longer than really needed, it almost gave rise to a slapstick comedy event of turning it one – going away for half an hour to return and not being able to get back in the Garage…. So be warned.

But in all it has my vote and is very practical.

No personal experience with these, but a friend has been using one for many years for his Corvette. He is a fanatic about his car (no eating, drinking or street shoes allowed to enter the cabin!). He swears by the product. Puts the car in on Nov 1 of every year and removes it on May 1 of the following year. If I remember correctly he had a heater option installed as well. He purchased his from carcapsule.com//nk

Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between the "Car Capsule" that Moss sells and the more expensive "Carcoon?" The "Permabag" that Neil uses is still considerably more than the "Car Capsule," and from their website it sounds like it takes some monitoring. I'm looking at storing a car in an unheated garage thousands of miles from home and only getting it out a couple times a year. The mice are a big concern, too, and I'm not crazy about the smell of mothballs. And then there's the cat. Maybe this whole idea is crazy and I should just go on renting late model cars when I'm down in Oregon. But it sounds like if the "Car Capsule" is essentially equivalent to the "Carcoon," it would be pretty effective and affordable. Thanks again.
