MG MGA - CB radios in the UK & Europe

Do any MGA drivers use CB radios to keep in contact when travelling in groups in the UK and Europe? What frequencies are permitted (27, 446, 470 mHz? Any comments on brand, range etc would be appreciated.

Mike, No idea whether MG convoys use them here but the off roaders do. I use them on shoots and we are on the 446MHz range. Not sure what the rules are in Europe. Shane

Try doing a search on Personal Radio Service or PMR446 which is the official standard in Europe across all the EU states.

WE tend to use our cellphones, but I guess in Oz coverage may be an issue which we don't have.

Cell phones have mostly obsoleted CB radio in the states also, but the radios are still more convenient for short range communication between groups of vehicles, like Mike was asking about. CB is still very popular with off-road clubs, because it can get around terrain features better than higher frequency (line of sight) devices. Truckers still seem to use them, and I have heard talk between oversize trucks and their pilot cars on channel 9 while traveling in my Jeep.

Honestly, CB is probably a lot more useful now that most of the idiots who used to be on CB are on cell phones.

Not sure of the rules regarding cb radio in Europe but one thing that you may have to consider is whether or not you can hear it!

In my mga I can't tell if the rado is switched on or off once the car is
moving.
You will most likely need earphones.

I can barely hear mine in my hardtop Jeep at highway speed, and that's with an extra external speaker. Too much wind noise from the roof rack.

Many of us in the Connecticut MG Club use CBs on our road trips. I have a secondary speaker taped on to the battery-cover tab--works well. (Tab is only on 1600 cover not 1500)
