MG MGA - Colourtune

A recent posting on the MGB Technical bulletin board suggested that a Colourtune will not work properly with unleaded fuel. Can anyone confirm this?

Thats rubbish Malcolm. You are looking at the colour of the gas combustion going on in the chamber so it doesnt matter what the fuel is.

That's false information. I use a ColourTune to setup my SU carbs as well as others in our local club. You can definitely see the colour change between orange, bunson blue, and white as the mixture is adjusted.

I tried a friend's Colortune years ago with 10% ethanol fuel. We've had that fuel here for over 30 years. I found that the best tune with the Colortune was exactly the same as when I set the carbs up according to the workshop manual. I decided at that time not to buy it.

I believe that the biggest problem with the color tune is trying to use it in bright daylight - the color washes out then doing that. It is best used in a garage, with the lights turned out to make the ambient light on the dim side. I have never had a problem with the color tune with leaded, unleaded or E10 fuel at all. I am a bit color blind, so that probably doesn't help either!

Colourtune is a gem of a kit. I use it on my mga and get the best tune ever . With a size adapter I recently used it on tuning a ford v8 with a 4 barrel carb. with a great result. all unleaded.

I have 2 Colourtunes but agree with Chuck. I can get a more accurate tune using the standard methods. The Colourtune has too broad a range of use, in my opinion. The next best step is to move to an A/F ratio meter. Anybody have a preferred brand of A/F meter?
