MG MGA - Convert Windshield Wipers from Right to Left Hand

I don't like the current parking position of my windshield wipers and bought new wiper arms to convert them to park to the left instead of the right. I found Barney's comments about it http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et111.htm but it's still not clear to me what I need to do. Any more information out there?

Thanks,
Gene

I'd try turning the cap (park switch) on the motor 180 degrees. I don't think they would have had to do much more than that at the factory for RH/LH drive....?

Remove the arms and install a zip tie on the post to see what's happening.

On a LHD car it's really cramped to get at the wiper motor. Easier than Barney's instructions - just go up underneath the dashboard and unscrew the plates under the wiper boxes. Release the drive rack out of the wiper boxes. Then loosen the nut on the wiper spindle up top, turn the whole wiper boxes 180 degrees and reassemble. This will then have the cable running on the other side of the box. Before you fit the wiper arms again, switch the power on to the wipers and let the system run a few sweeps and switch off again to let them park. Then fit the arms in the parked position. That's all. Can be done in 30 minutes or less.

Now that is a really clever solution Dominic, Im pretty sure that I would never have thought of doing that.

Do let me know how that comes out. It has been my experience that access under the dash to the wheelboxes is insanely difficult on a fully assembled car. At least one of the screws in hiding behind a demister duct. I'm also not sure if the assembly can even fit together upside down.

I can’t do it that way...my A is a coupe with air conditioning. To try to get under the dash to work on the wipers is impossible...I’ll have to do it Barney’s way.

Barney, it works perfectly and only needs the right angle of approach to get at the screws.

One last question before I try Barney's method...do the windshield wipers need to be in the on position, i.e., sweeping when I do this?
Gene Gillam

Nope. Remove the wiper arms first. When you pull the motor out (if you do), motion of the cable will rotate the spindles. When you push the motor back in, spindles will rotate again. Test run the system to observe rotation and park position of the spindles. When satisfied that it is correct, put the wiper arms back on in the parked position.

Went out and changed the sweep this morning. I used a very small 1/4" box end wrench and it was accomplished in about 5 minutes. I did notice my wiper box was a bit different than that shown on Barney's site...it didn't have a round top but a kinda oblong top with rounded ends. It definitely made it easy to turn but I wonder what it's out of?
