MG MGA - Coupe window regulators
Does anyone have any experience of repairing coupe window regulators? Replacements do not seem to be available. The teeth on the rack are all fine as is the gear driven by the winder. A drive/friction spring has been removed because it kept jammimg the winder. The net result is that the glass, whilst winding up and down has no resistance to travel. The window therefore slowly opens under its own weight. Does anyone have a spare regulator?

Just saw a door for sale on eBay. You may want to check there.

I know nothing about the coupe regulator. But that being said, I would be surprised if somebody hasn't done a similar repair before. Virtually anything that can be made, can be repaired. Have you done an internet search? Maybe for a Morris car? All you need to do is figure out how it is supposed to work given the pieces you've got and then figure out why it isn't working. It is a lot easier to get something working that once did work than trying to get something working that is a new idea and never worked before. I know this is not much help. But that philosophy has gotten me thru many repairs. Especially if you feel that you have nothing to loose. Something broke and need to be replaced cannot break futher. Chuck

I had the same problem with one of my window regulators. G T Foster kindly sent me some photographs of a repair using the mechanism from a MG Magnette. However, although I took mine apart, breaking some lugs in the process as normal, I found that a small coiled spring had broken inside and I didn't go any further with the repair. No new parts are available as you know but I happened to be talking to Bob West and he had a NOS regulator in stock which I purchased. I do not think he has any more NOS but he did offer me a good used one as well. May be worth a phone call to him. Rod

I solved the same problem by using the moving parts of a (new)MGB mechanism and transplant it into the MGA housing. Needs a little bit of quality welding, although if I could do it it is not impossible for a handy man... Regards, Guido

Mr. Roget, I do indeed have a repair process for coupe window regulators. However, the specific problem you describe may not be covered. But, if your gears are OK it sounds like if you put a spring back in, it should work OK. My write-up does discuss spring replacement. I think Barney Gaylord has posted my information on his web site. Take a look. If it doesn't help, contact me directly. Cheer, Gerry

Hi DJR Which side regulator are you after? I may have a spare. I fitted one to my Twin Cam which wound down on its own but I couldn't see a reason for it. They can be converted left to right with a bit of thought and a mig welder Terry
