MG MGA - Cracked fuel hose fitting

Earlier this week I discovered a long crack in the fitting at one end of the fuel pipe to carb hose. See the attached picture. This a Moss part, 376-350 purchased and installed June, 2006. It is not leaking but had the crack developed on the other side I might have gone some time before I noticed it or it started leaking. The latter most certainly resulted in a fire.

I will be sending the part back to Moss, but thought the MGA crowd might be interested. If anyone one else has seen a similar defect please share.

Good heads up! Everybody should check as part of their pre-trip.

I found a cracked one too just a couple of weeks ago,i put hose clamp on it for now!

This is a new on to me. I have Moss supplied fuel hoses, the Teflon lined ones with stainless steel braid on the outside. These have been in service for more than 24 years and 236,000 miles. That Teflon bore liner is a godsend with modern motor fuel.

On the original question, no cracked fittings here. This one may be a freak, possibly the only occurrence and maybe never again. If there is ever a second example of this fracture on another identical part of any age, then it is a manufacturing problem, either brittle metal or over zealous crimping.

This kind of fatigue crack may appear only after many years of use. As such the time from new to failure may be essentially impossible to predict, at least until you document at least a dozen failures with well know time log. Meanwhile, as already suggested, everyone take a few minutes to check their existing parts.

The curious thing is that there appear to be two separate fractures. It would be interesting to see what it looks like inside at the joining point. Is it factured on the inside?

If you grasp the hose and wiggle it sideways, the leverage applies high stress on both ends of the crimp barrel, so naturally this is where stress cracks will start. Once a crack gets started, more time and more vibration will continue to extend length of the crack. These cracks may have been there for a long time to grow to such length. When inspecting existing parts, look for any tiny short crack originating at either end of the barrel.

I did notice that your chassis plate is fitted the opposite way round to mine, ie, yours is read from the left side of the car. Clausager's book shows them fitted both ways.
Time for a poll?
