MG MGA - Filler pipe

Just got the gas tank in and found that I have to lower it again to get the seal retaining plate into position. The filler neck seems to be off centre of the hole in the trunk floor. I can't see anything wrong with the straps etc so can't see any way to reposition it. On the other hand I can get the filler pipe to line up pretty well. Is everything OK here?

Your tank filler tube is in the correct position. You should be able to get the rubber gasket and the retaining plate onto the boot floor around the filler neck without lowering the tank again. I had to make my own rubber gasket from inner tube material as the gasket supplied by a local MG parts supplier was not correct. The 3 nuts under the boot floor are usually floating captive in cages, but this is not essential.
Make sure the rubber hose connecting the two pipes is fuel grade - some have had the hose disintegrate because it is eaten by the gasoline.

Art,
With reference to your comments about this on the cap topic, I'm not sure why your metal plate will not slip over the gas tank filler tube. It should be able to be manipulated in over the tank pipe.
The upper filler pipe with the cap on it will have to be removed to fit the rubber connecting hose. This hose will have two clamps around it - fit and tighten the lower one, then refit the upper pipe, press it into the trunk so the rubber ring is tight, and then tighten the upper clamp around the hose. This will ensure that the grommet is tight into the body to prevent rain getting into the trunk.

Peter, the ring was fouling on the raised portion of the floor, just aft of the opening. I loosened the tank and now have my gasket and ring in place. I have 3 sections of hose from the PO, but I think I'll buy new as they are all of dubious quality.

The oval shaped metal plate is usually difficult to fit after the tank is bolted into position. I have always found it better to loose fit the plate and rubber gasket as the tank is assembled into place, then tighten the screws later.

Peter, I also had to -- "make my own rubber gasket from inner tube material as the gasket supplied by a local MG parts supplier was not correct".

Barry,
It seems that someone has an incorrect template for this. The hole is the wrong shape as the oval is back to front!
Maybe this is another item for Barney's bad part list?
Art - pleased to hear your got it on. The hose should have a reference printed on it that it is fuel grade.

The problem with the ring is ancient, I tried it and discovered the problem 25 years ago, and just threw the repro away and have done without ever since. I have a carpet in the boot which makes everything look tidy

I've had my fuel tank out and in a few times. At least twice after restoration work I installed the tank first and the gasket and ring after with no problem.Once teh gasket and ring are in place you can R&R the tank without removing the gasket and ring.

Not sure what you folks are talking about, gasket not fitting. Twice in the past (1986 and 2008) I have installed a new rubber seal here with no problem. The seal I got is a flat piece of thick rubber sheet with a slightly undersize hole in the middle. When installed it gets stretched some to go over the pipe. The edge that goes under the pipe is best depressed slightly downward, while the rest of the seal is deformed upward to stretch tightly on top and sides of the pipe.

If I thought this was ever going to be a problem part I would have taken a picture last time I had it apart. As is now, my boot carpet is glued in place making the boot floor seal inaccessible. I would appreciate it if someone could provide a picture of the parts in assembly. Also if some current supply seal is incorrect and not useable, I would like a picture of that too, along with the supplier's information, so I can post it as a Faulty Part (and possibly get the part corrected).

Barney it may be just my problem. I have had the front and rear clips divorced and re-mated in my work. Maybe that has shifted the rear a bit, although the doors close fine.I think the whole body might shift backwards 1/8" if I tried , which I am not going to do! There is not much room to juggle the tank once it is snugged up in the slings. I also used some material for toolbox floors as the padding on the slings - it may be a bit thick. Anyhow, I modified the width of the seal ring in the rearmost region and it slips on and off OK now.
