MG MGA - Filling Rear Dampers

Any clever ideas on topping off the rear dampers?

Flex spout trigger pump oil can.

Can rear dampers be topped up without removing them from the car?

With the right oil spout, yes. You can't see into the port while filling, but when it runs over you know it's full.

I use an old hypodermic needle body with clear flexible tube but as Barney says you know it's full when it overflows. Have a good day!

QUESTION Should the shocks be filled to the top ?
I just received mine back from the rebuilder and they were only approx three quarters full.

It would be nice to leave a small air space (1/8") for thermal expansion. Otherwise if filled to the top, the first time they get hot they will force a little oil out past the seal to make their own expansion space.

Quick question Barney, or others;
On one of my rear shocks there are some oil traces (minor leak) where the shock-arm goes into the shock-body.
I need to check the level of the shock to see much much is in there (and how much was lost).

Do you think this is a symptom of a shot damper? does it automatically mean it qualifies for a rebuild at a specialist? or can I continue driving it as long as the it doesn't develop into a big leak?

As long as you don't mind the oil stain, and the shock works, keep driving it/ When oil leaks out faster than you care to refill, it's time for a rebuild.
