MG MGA - First of many questions...

Hi all,

Well earlier this week I took delivery of my 'new' MGA. She's a 1956 1500. Today I started making an inventory of what I've got and what's missing etc, etc. Mostly she seems complete. However, I've noticed something I've not seen on any other cars, can anyone shed some light please?

The top of the rear edge of the bonnet has two pairs of holes (fore and aft) which line up with two holes in the scuttle, making two lines of three holes. Also in the boxes of parts, there are two surface hinges, shaped like aircraft drop tanks - a sort of elongated teardrop shape - They look a lot like early mini door hinges. These hinges have threaded studs protruding out of the bottom that fit into the holes described earlier. I don't think this is normal, I've not seen any other cars with this feature.

Any ideas?

Someone (the dreaded DPO) added those to your car , the hinges are the same as for the boot lid and bolt on from the bottom.
You will need to have an skilled welder with a tig welder and aluminum experiance to weld up the holes in the bonnet. The doors usually have the need to be repaired at the same time. There is a 1/2 inch hole in the top on the door where the socket for the side windows plug in. They are usually worn into an oval. If they are oval have them welded shut and redrilled at the same time. If your deck lid has been drilled for a luggage rack make sure the holes match the rack you are to use. Or as I suggest eliminate the rack altogether.
Congratulations on you recent addition.

Andy, It is difficult to visualise the conditions you describe. I have posted a photo of the bonnet hinges below, hope that helps. The other end of the hinge, hidden up under, should look the same. Could I suggest a digital camera as an essential "tool" for your rebuild! An eyeful sure beats an earful! If we see - we understand. Keep the questions coming.
Good luck, Barry

Andy,

The hinges could be from a Triumph TR sports car.
Obviously you will not be using them, but for interest, if you see a Triumph TR2, TR3 or TR3A in the street you could compare them. The early TR models had external teardrop shaped bonnet hinges.

Thanks Guys

I didn't think that was right, I was expecting similar hinges as on my MGB.

I'll take some photo's later and post them here.

With respect to the holes in the top of the doors, there seem to be quite a few, again I'll post some photo's later with appropriate questions.

Thanks

Early 1500's had LTD pegs on top of the doors to secure the wide tonneau cover.
