MG MGA - front dampers

Hi All

My first time as a new member ,i am restoring a 1961 mga roadster and i need to overall or replace the front dampers as one is limp and both have a slight leak on them .Is it possible for me to service these and if so where can the kits be obtained and if not best place to get new ones at a good price.
Im sure i will have plenty more post :)

They are not that expensive to exchange. Not aware of an overhaul kit. You could try Bob West. I am aware that he does not think very highly of some of the overhaul companies, but he does do a good set of dampers from a reputable company. Worth a chat with him before you decide. His contact details are on his website: http://www.bobwestclassiccars.co.uk/

I don't think I have ever seen any rebuild kits advertised for the shocks. Mine are currently with Peter at World Wide Auto Parts being rebuilt to better than new standard.

The best price I found for good recons a few years ago was Brown & Gammons. They are the correct originals, not B bodies with A arms.

Got mine done by Pete at World Wide Auto Parts.. They are perfect..

M, are you likely to get your MGA on the road before May this year?

If you are you should join up with the MGA Registers Spring Tour which is based in Matlock this year.

There should be over 50 MGAs there and the 2 day tour of Derbyshire arranged by Stuart Mumby should be fantastic. Stuarts tour routes are legendary.

We are staying for the weekend but with you being relatively local, you could join for either one day or both as you wish.

Dont worry if your car isnt perfect as we get both concours cars and MGAs that have been driven continuously since they came off the production line.

Two years ago in Wales we had a "rolling restoration" MGA turn up. It was an import from the USA and it had almost no paint on it, no interior trim and what looked like the original whitewall tyres.
But in spite of that it got an amazing amount of attention and admiration.

Best of luck with your restoration and I hope you get the shockers and the rest of the car sorted before May.

Cheers

I had mine done by World Wide and they are perfect.

Just a comment, I also had mine redone by Peter at World Wide and was very pleased with them.

Peter gives you the option of how you want them painted, he paints the whole thing black by default but I had the bodies left bare aluminum and the arms painted.

He also replaces the felt seals with sealed bearings so there's a good chance you'll never need to top them up with oil ever again.

He has shocks on the shelf for fast exchange or he'll rebuild yours and return them.

Very quick service and quality, I highly recommend using Peter.

A few years ago when I replaced mine, Brown & Gammons in Baldock Herts had the best price, and their parts are usually dependable and the service is great
