MG MGA - Fuel pump rebuilding?

Does anyone know someone good who rebuilds SU type fuel pumps? Lawrie Rhodes used to but I understand not anymore. Thanks and have a good day!

Try Tom Ball. He's listed in the classifieds in NAMGAR'S newsletter MGA! Marvin

John. David DuBois does, posts here regularly, and provides a quality product at a fair price.

john - check the links on on my web site that Les linked in his post. there are a list of people who repair SU fuel pumps (Tom Ball is one). I restore the pumps and modify them to solid state, but I only work Oct. 1 through June 1. Cheers - Dave
David DuBois

Hi John,
I can recommend Dave DuBois in Washington. I've got 2 rebuilt pumps from him and they work perfectly. It is a relief not to worry about burnt points with the reed switch conversion. One pump is a backup in case I am adventurous enough for a long trip in the MGA.

I have given up on SU fuel pumps. I think that they are well past their use-by date and no-one wants to guarantee their overhaul in terms of long-term operation. I have fitted modern Fuelflos (made in NZ? but available here in Adelaide, South Australia) to several cars, both pre- and post-war (including MGC).

David's guarantee seems pretty long term to me. From his webpage:

"There is a one year warranty on parts and a lifetime warranty on labor on all pumps that I restore"

I know he is a long way from Australia, but just wanted to say that there is at least one guy who stands behind his work.

No, I've never done business with David and I have no financial interst....Yada Yada. I only know him from years of being on this board.

The whole car package is well past their use by date, but thats the point

Barry - Check my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Tony Oliver of NSW is linked as one of the people who does SU fuel pump work. You might want to check him out before making such a sweeping statement as "no-one wants to guarantee their overhaul in terms of long-term operation".

As for Fuel Flow being the ultimate in reliability, I have been in communications with Graham and their product looks to be an excellent pump (I will reserve final judgment to see how the plastic body holds up), but like any other electric or electronic fuel pump, they are still an electromechanical device that can and will fail in spite of the best in design and manufacturing efforts - that's just the nature of the beast. I worked in the electronics field for over 40 years and if I learned anything, it is to not trust it. Install the best pump you can find, but carry a spare. Cheers - Dave

I admire you chaps who are sticklers for "originality", as I am (except for fuel pumps!).
Dave, you have my unbridled admiration for your work, knowledge and expertise on SU fuel pumps (having read the comments on this thread) but the "one year warranty", I think, says it all!

Barry - "the "one year warranty", I think, says it all!"

You didn't quote the rest of my warranty. You might want to check what the warranty period is for any of the after market pumps. I doubt that they can match mine, much less beat it. Cheers - Dave

I note that there is another thread running about SU fuel pump problems! My oldest Fuelflo is certainly over ten years old, perhaps more like fifteen, with total reliability. They are relatively cheap, quiet (certainly inaudible with the engine running) and low pressure. I will not hesitate to fit one to my Varitone Magnette if I live long enough to restore it! Electrics/electronics have come a long way since the early 1930's when SU pumps were introduced, superseding the troublesome SU Petrolift ("plumbed" in on my F-type Magna but there is a hidden Fuelflo under the car!).
