MG MGA - Fuel Sending Unit

Does anybody have a source for a decent fuel sending unit? Or has Moss improved on the one they are selling? I had bought a Moss unit a year ago and I was so disapointed with it that I tossed it. I tried to make it work and ended up damaging it. So I could not return it(Lesson Learned). I ended up repairing the coil on the old one but it continued to spike when full or close to empty. I even ran a ground strap to the arm (Which did help some) However if anybody is selling a good one I would rather just upgrade!

Keep an eye on ebay. I picked up a good used original one last year for a reasonable price after finally getting tired of my fuel guage needle spiking violently.

Yes Andy, i think you out bid me :) I have been looking on e-bay but you do not see to many come up. I misssed a great opertunity for a NOS unit because I forgot to bid :( And the second unit you show is the one I received from Moss and you are quite wright on your discription

You can use an original from a Morris Minor if you can get one. I managed to get one very cheap off ebay, but you will have to rake through Morris Minor bits for a while! (they tend to be in mixed lots)
You will need to keep an original MGA unit to match the float wire profile.
There is also a Minor unit sold regularly on ebay, claiming to be OEM and made in UK, but even if that is the case, it's for a later car as it is of different construction.

Don't buy units with plastic floats. The wire around the float ends up wearing through the float, at which point it fills up with fuel and becomes useless.

I have a Morris minor or Morris 1000 unit in my car. It fitted perfectly, just needed two minutes work with a pair of pliers to rebend the wire arm to match the profile of the MGA unit's arm.

If anyone has a dead fuel sender body, I'd appreciate the stud at the bottom for attaching the wiring harness. Then I can repair the one sitting in my graveyard box.

My recommendation would be to find a used part, or if you are incredibly lucky a NOS part.

Unlike Dominic I don't have experience of the plastic float type. The one I used looks exactly like the MGA sender with aluminium float, the only difference being that the wire is bent slightly differently. As Dominic says the wire can be re-bent the same and the two parts are then interchangeable.

My fear would be that the plastic float parts are also cheap repros and are no better than the MGA repros.

I have found that with the plastic floats it is a simple matter to remove the float and round off the outer end of the wire, this keeps it from digging in and perforating the plastic float.

I sent my original out to Nisonger Instruments (along with the fuel gauge). They can check out your sending unit or rebuild the original. Very pleased with the service.
