MG MGA - Fuel tank sender

My fuel sender seems to be stuck at about 100 ohms, have checked earthing etc.
So who makes the best replacement, unless someone has a NOS one hidden away?
David k Brenchley

Hi David
I can't say who's is best, only that I bought mine a couple of years back from Brown and Gammons and have had no problems. I chose that one principally because the picture showed it came with the chunky rubber seal, as I had heard that is superior to the cork gasket, especially with an older tank that might be very slightly out of shape around that aperture.
Having said that, when it arrived it came with the cork gasket but I called and they immediately sent me the rubber one FOC.
For the negligible cost involved I thought it prudent to also replace the retaining screws, to try to ensure no leaks past the threads.
I also used just a minimal amount of Holymer blue on the screws and gasket. I was warned on this forum to go very easy with it, as it can get in the petrol and block up the fuel lines, etc.

Good luck, Graham

If the float was punctured, flooded and sunk it should read 0-ohms. Don't know how it could get stuck on high ohms unless it may be an incorrect sender unit. Need to remove it from the tank for inspection.

As to your question, after decades of crappy sender units everywhere, the current Moss Motors parts are good quality and in the correct resistance range.

Moss offer(ed) a Eurospare UK AAV 8340 as a modern equivalent for the MGA, except it had to be installed upside down. But don't go there, the resistances are all wrong.

Moss gave a refund and I decided my original sender was not that bad after all and with two resistor wipers instead of the single wiper of the modern sender I reckoned the original was a better instrument.

There is a chap called Robert Fenn who lives near Andover. He makes gauges from scratch for all sorts of exotic classic cars if you send him the gauge and sender unit he repair and calibrate them at a reasonable cost.I can recommend him as he sorted my sender unit an also my rev counter.
His phone number is01264 737717 and his e mail address is RobertFenn@aol.com

Okay, not sure about current Moss UK part. Last report I got from there was in August 2014 when AHH5114 sender unit checked out okay. See report at bottom of page here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/fg115.htm

The Moss USA sender units are also good, double wipers, tight windings correct resistance range (1.2-ohm empty to 80-ohm full as recently measured).
