MG MGA - fuel tank sending unit screw thread?

What is the screw thread used on the fuel tank to mount the sending unit?
Thanks, George

No. 8-32 and I'm pretty sure the originals had the unusual slotted hex. head as I had a few left on my unit. .................................Mike

I have been told by Moss Spares in the UK that the thread is BA. I am going to try and work out which number of the BA range, certainly under 8, as I want some longer ones than they supply. Moss said they can't get BA but I am also a railway modeler and BA is easily available from modelling supliers. I could give contacts if requird.

I had also heard that it is a 5BA thread. However, an 8-32 goes in just fine. The major dia of 5BA and 8-32 are almost identical, but the thread pitch of the 5BA is 43 TPI (I think). I have the slotted hex head screws that Mike has, and a 32TPI thread pitch gage fits those perfectly. Another MGA mystery....?

BA threads have a 47.5 degree included angle. 3BA is 0.003" larger than #8-32, and 34.8 threads per inch. If the tolerances are right A #8-32 screw with 60 degree thread form might screw into a short section 3BA female thread. It may even hold well enough to secure a fuel sender unit. Mine still has the slotted hex head screws, so I suspect they are original 3BA screws.

I think Barney is right again (as usual!), the sending unit uses 3BA hex head screws, not 5BA. The thread data form I have has a very small font size for these tired eyes!
