MG MGA - Gas cap, am I missing something?

I am using the original gas cap and some new parts and it is very sloppy. Is there a bushing or something missing where the hinge fits over the wire in the filler pipe? see picture.
Thanks,
HJ

I think you just need to bend the hinge/tab in a bit - nature of the beast...

Do you have the spring behind the sealing plate? (between plate and lever) And is the plate sitting on top of the cork seal? Originally it was a slotted screw with flat and serrated washer, but that would make no difference. Otherwise your assembly is complete. You should feel pressure on that spring when you close the cap, but it can be a little loose or "sloppy" when it's open.

Don't forget the advice from others who have played around with these parts: stuff a rag in the pipe before taking anything apart. Saves losing bits into the tank.

As A.J. has pointed out, it looks as though the bent hinge is not bent far enough around the wire rim, resulting in the same hinge making solid contact with the circumference of the filler opening, thus restricting a proper & even fit. Also note that even when the cap is installed the right way, by nature, it remains somewhat sloppy. Try and bend the hinge around the rim a bit more, but be careful not to snap it off. Be patient.

Steve,
Thanks for reminder. I already had the experience of fishing out the opening tab from deep inside the tank. Had to remove side plate and go in that way with magnet.
